If you are careful and avoid situations involving idiot drivers you can avoid almost all accidents. However sooner or later you will be in one that is not your fault.
Think about all those trucks that were in that chain reaction I-5 tunnel collision. No matter how great the guy in the middle truck was he was guaranteed to be involved when the vehicle ahead of him slammed into another one and stopped and the guy behind him kept going until it hit his truck.
I was in myself this summer where I was in a line of cars stopped for a red light and the car behind me slammed into my car because that driver had no idea that 10 cars in front of her had been stopped for a while waiting for that light to turn.
As far as seat belts all you have to do is listen to the evening news. There is always a story about "a car filled with four teenagers slammed into a tree at high speed. The three without seat-belts were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth had a seat belt and was taken to the local hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

This is a question that really can't be truely answered.
You have many different occasions, scenarios, situations that can occur which can lead to many many different outcomes.
Being a defensive driver can assist in avoiding accidents.
Being watchful of the road certainly does help.
There are just sometimes when you can't do anything, such as if you hit black ice, oil spill, lose traction on a dirt road.
I am not sure where you live but pretty much anything can happen, and all you can do is the best you can.
Be attentive, be aware of everyone around you, including pedestrians too, cause some people think their lightning and can cross the road in time.
The answer is yes and no, it really all depends on the circumstances and situation. But I would say you have a better chance on avoiding an accident if you are a attentive, well trained driver.
(Locking the brakes up wont stop the car)
But just because you are the spokes person for #1 Best driver, doesn't mean everyone else is.

ALWAYS wear you seatbelt. I had an accident happen next to me a few weeks ago. A 17 year old girl was trying to avoid hitting a minivan that was stopped in front of her and swerved into oncoming traffic (I don't know why she went that way and not into the ditch). She hit an oncoming car head-on. When I got to the car all you could see through the window was her head. She did not have a seatbelt on and the rest of her body was shoved under the dashboard.
She is now paralyzed. If she had had her seatbelt on her body would not have crumpled under the dash like that.
I personally believe that if you are a careful driver and avoid doing stupid stuff you can significantly cut down your chances. The problem is that you have no control over other people and that is where you cannot say 100% that you will not get into an accident.
Just like this girl. She went into the other lane, right around another car. The man driving the car she hit could not avoid the accident, everything happened to fast.
Just try your best, don't goof around and do dumb stuff, and follow the rules of the road and that is the best you can do.

Accidents are unavoidable no matter how good you are in driving.
For seat belts, it is very, very important to wear it/use it. It will minimize the damage you will have to take if got an accident.
*I had a car accident few hours ago. As I was avoiding hitting a parked car, I bumped the house fence near it which is made of hollow blocks. When it bumped, as if it was like a lightning situation. The air bag suddenly came out and blocked my face from hitting the steering wheel/handle of the car. I was intact in my seat as I was wearing a seatbelt. If not, I could have hit my head at the window pane or over the dashboard. I felt a bit shocked that even until now I cannot realized how it happened as it was a sudden crashed. So aside from seatbelt, it is a very good thing also to have an air bag equipped on your car.
*My car cannot be used anymore from that accident. And I'm waiting for the car dealer to come later as I order a new car to replace it. So sad to think but it had happened already.

you can develop good habits which can help minimize your chances of having an accident but the sad reality is that there are careless, distracted or even irresponsible people out there who drive cars. Some good habits to develop: 1) always have an escape route ie. know what's around you and where you can swerve if the car in front of you suddenly stops or crashes. 2) always maintain a safe speed and distance from other cars. 3) Don't eat, smoke, drink, look for things while you're driving. Driving is a responsibility and being alert and proactively safe can greatly decrease the likelihood of an accident. 4) Always be ready for the worst, ie thinking, what would I do if my tire blows right now? What could I do if the truck 3 cars ahead of me suddenly turns over? what would I do if that child lost a ball and ran into the street in front of me? Good luck!

Well its always good to be a safe driver but no matter how safe you are there will always be chances of getting into an accident even if you didn't cause it. There are plenty of road raged drivers and alcoholics who will swerve without notice. And yes, seat belts do help for they saved my life, they may leave you with a few bruises because of the impact of you pushing at them, but at lest you will not rocket out of the front window. If an airbag were to deploy and you did not have a seat belt on, them imagine what it would be like having get hit in the face by a brick, then again in the back of the head. That would be nearly enough to rattle your brain to death.

You can only control yourself. You can't stop someone from running a red light, or going through a stop light and plowing into you. Weather is also a big factor when vision can be impaired, or winter traction issues. Make sure you drive for the conditions, if it's a snow storm drive at a comfortable speed even if others want to go the speed limit or higher.
If you pay attention, look both ways, check mirrors, etc. before changing lanes or directions, stay off the phone, don't eat or do any other silly thing while you're supposed to be driving your chances go up that you'll stay safe and have a good driving record.

I think you can avoid being in a car accident by being aware of the dangers. For example slippery roads, cars or trucks coming up behind you at the lights too fast, people driving through red lights. If you are aware you can take steps to minimise the risk greatly. Its when you are unaware of a risk that accidents happen. I havent had an accident in over 20 years and have driven a lot in that time.

They say it takes two bad drivers to get into an accident. This is true to some extent; however, sometimes there is no way to avoid an accident. You can greatly reduce your risk of getting into an accident by being a defensive driver. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!!! you can get a ticket if you don't and it is way safer!!! good luck and I am sure you will do fine!

No there's no way. So many bad drivers out there. All the accidents I've been in are caused by others. Hit from behind a few times, side swiped once. People who don't pay attention cause accidents.
