Umm.. if money is an issue do some research get the yellow pages and look up spay and neuter clinics, they're actually cheaper then the vets office. There's also several organizations that offer very cheap spay and neuters, I've heard that animal shelters assist people in having their pets spayed and neutered. Don't put the cat's life in jeopardy to save a few bucks, if money is an issue do some leg work find a better alternative then possibly maiming or killing your pet.

There are lots of things that are "commonly done" but that doesn't make them right. Yes, farmers have been doing their own castrations for years, that's true. But what sorts of complications have they had, and how many infections/deaths/etc do they see as a result? No one bothered posting any sort of statistics on that, of course. Hey, if you neuter your steer, and he gets an infection, then he's butchered. If you neuter the cat, and he gets an infection, then he's either allowed to suffer or he's shot in the head. Agreeing with this sort of post is truly irresponsible - it's hard enough to get people to take their animals to the vet (how many posts a day about home remedies for illnesses and injuries do we see?) without this sort of encouragement for home vetting. Believe it or not - we once had a cat in rescue who was brought to the shelter when the at-home declaw went bad :o(

RE:
How can I neuter my cat at home?
I'm a do-it-yourselfer and don't see why I should pay $100 to get my cat's balls cut off. I know some of the Amish and other farmers do their own steers by themselves. So how can I do this to my cat for cheap?

There are a couple of procedures farmers use for castrating animals, but (as has been pointed out here) a cat is not a steer. Specifically, a cat can reach his balls, where a steer or pig can't. If you were to castrate the cat surgically, the cat would be pawing at the stitches; if you did it with an elastic band to cut off the blood flow to the area, as is commonly done with pigs, the cat would simply remove it before it had a chance to work.
I kind of agree with the rest of the posters here who have told you that if you are not willing to pay the costs of basic veterinary procedures, you are not a good candidate to own pets. I recommend you give the cat up for adoption to a person or family who will take better care of it.
And I don't even LIKE cats.

Okay seriously are you stupid? That is extremely dangerous for your cat. Go to the humane society and ask about financial aid and they'll help you find a cheaper way. That's what my family did. We got 4 cats fixed only 40 bucks! That's ten dollars a piece.
If you can't do that. Give your cat to someone who can.

It's not a big deal, and save tons of money. Scalpels are fairly cheap and easy to get and can be used multiple times. Take a shot and clean area with alcohol, lightly pinch scrotum around testicles and bulge them outta the scrotum slightly, lightly make a incision and they basically pop right out, cut the tube connecting them and super glue shut. The pain will go away after awhile and you should come up with some amoxicillin to prevent infection you can order it online and again multiple uses!! Pour whiskey on area to steralize, and take a shot to help with coping with the process and pain. May not seem like a good idea and may not be legal, but it's better than having you reproduce!! Everyone wants to save a buck, but if you wouldnt do it to yourself dont do it to your innocent and loving pet!!! I went to a doctor, so did they!! Rofl!!

Most communities offer a low cost spay/neuter program. Attempting to do it at home is only asking for the cat to get an infection or even die. Not to mention that it would be cruel to do such a thing without an anesthetic, how would you like it done to you that way?

Try an animal shelter or a pet store like Pets Mart or Petco. They might have a cheaper rate. Don't do it yourself. You'll just end up killing your cat.

You've got to be kidding. This is a CAT - not a steer, not a lamb. There is a reason why a vet needs to do this. One - pain, two - getting the cat to hold still, three - ensuring no major arteries are cut - four - well, do I need to go on? You will be torturing your cat - doesn't speak to well for you as an owner...Give it to the spca if you can't afford basic care and if you are going to torture it!!!

The difference is the SIZE!!!!! Yes, size matters!!!!! Bulls, even calves, have much bigger balls than cats do. So the same methods are not used.
It is actually very easy to neuter a cat, but anesthesia is required.
