Do you have an adjustment on your clutch linkage? I don't know much about the Escort, but if it's a hydraulic linkage, there's usually a threaded rod with a nut between the clutch pedal and the master cylinder that you can adjust to get more travel. If it's a cable linkage, look under the hood where the cable connects to the clutch actuation arm...there should be a barrel adjuster there. You want to loosen the cable. I think it's a cable linkage on the Escort...most front-wheel-drive cars are.
You might still have a little material left on the clutch plate, but the clutch pedal travel isn't letting you use it.
I've adjusted the clutches on both my cars when it felt like the clutch was almost gone, and they feel like new again.
But when the friction material on the clutch plate is gone, it's gone!

Well it is worn and it won't get better...can only deteriorate... Might last a couple of months, depends on your usage and careful driving... Get it done as soon as you can to avoid a breakdown somewhere....
