You should pick your breed of dog determining the lifestyle you live and how much time you have to care for that particular breed! Every breed is different and require a certain type of family or caregiver to match that particular dogs personality traits!! If you get a long hair dog like a shitzu or poodle then you have to brush the hair really good every day, like you would your own. If you want a dog that is easy to train then don't get ANYTHING that is a terrior...and that goes for the popular breed...the Yorkie. This is a cute dog but is not an easy dog to keep!! My suggestion is to research which breed you want thoroughly first. Then put up a fence around your yard and then choose a local breeder who sells the dog you want privately. You should never buy from a pet store!!! Most of them have problems and have been inbred and come from parents who are malnourished!! If you can't provide the proper care for the dog or have any doughts AT ALL...then maybe you should invest your money and time into an animal that has less maintenance and needs!! Godd Luck

I think it depends on your child as to whether or not that is a good idea. I was babysitting by the time I was 12, so I was more than capable of taking care of a dog. Just remember that without having a fenced backyard, it will be up to you to let that dog out when she's not home. Either that or trust that whatever one you get is pottytrained enough to be able to stay in the house for a few hours by itself. Pets can be great for teaching children responsibility, but you need to make sure that she knows its not all fun and games. Also, make sure that you get a dog that suits your house size and the activity level of your family. If you get a large dog with a lot of energy, but you nor your daughter have the time to devote to walking that dog and playing with it, its probably not the best choice. Something smaller like a toy breed would probably be better as well without having a fenced back yard, as they are usually easier to contain, and can be crated easier if they need to stay in the house for longer times by themselves. Also, puppies can be a lot of work as well, so getting an older dog may not be a bad idea. And lastly, seriously consider adopting from a shelter before you think about buying a dog from a breeder. They need love too :-)

Well, you really need to get it fenced, or at least an invisable fence. But remind her how much work it is, and money.
But also, she can only do this with your help.
heres a site that shows you some stuff on rasing a puppy. http://www.avma.org/careforanimals/pawsforpets/puppy.asp
And heres a site that if you find a breed dog that you like, look it up here http://www.dogbreedinfo.com
Please, go to http://www.petfinder.com and look for dog in yoru area and call your local animal shelter/animal services and call for an appointment for a day on the weekend where you can spend some time looking for a dog that needs you and will be your forever friend! Please, help a dog from a shelter.
EDIT: go to this link and take the quiz and see which dog breed is for you!

Before you get a dog for your daughter, sit down and outline what HER responsibilities WILL be in regards to the dog. Make sure she realizes that the puppy is for life, not a toy to be discarded when she loses interest.
Then find a training club in your local area. Some clubs offer classes for the younger kids. The club I belong to, Tulsa Dog Training Club, www.tulsadogs.com, has a junior handlers class for 8 to 13 y/o. They learn the same exercises that the adults learn in the beginning obedience classes.
Start with a puppy class if/when you get the dog. It's good for the puppies socialization. Then continue with the training. Your daughter may get hooked on training and want to show the dog in obedience or agility.

i know this is going to sound dumb to people that dont know what this breed of dog is about
i would get a bull mastiff (i know they are big) but they are by far the BEST family pets i have ever owned/seen/etc. in my LIFE i have 3 now my 1 year old niece literately RIDES them and the dogs love kids they do not bite there has been very very very few
bull mastiff bites recorded less and i mean way less then shtsuz (sorry i dont know how to spell it)
and other smaller dogs but please before you even think about getting a dog make a fenced in area for them maybe not the whole yard i know how expensive that can be but big enough that the dog cant get out and has some room to run around
good luck

I got a cockapoo when I had just turned 13. It's been a few years now, and my time with him just gets better every day. He is the perfect first dog for me. I truly believe he is the best 'breed' out there. I put 'breed' in quotes because he is technically a mutt- but his mom was a purebred cocker spaniel and his dad a purebred poodle. He is 15 pounds, which is the perfect size- small and manegable, but solid. I don't have to worry about him getting hurt when rough housing with friends and the family. He doesn't shed, which is great (poodles have hair, not fur. It therefore doesn't shed, and if it does, it's very minimal). He has a wonderful, easy going personality, but can be energetic enough to go for a romp in the park with. I love him; I think cockapoos are the perfect breed, especially for young girls.
Before you get her a dog, make SURE she can handle it. They are a huge responsibility.

I say the best breed is Golden Retriever. I got one for my 8th birthday and another for my 13th, and they are my best friend ever since. (I'm almost 14) They are great family dogs, and great with children. Also, they are usually calm unless you let them be wild. I would reccomend fencing in your backyard. If my yard wasn't fenced in, my dogs would be off the the lake in a heartbeat. The only BAD thing about a Golden is they can get hip displacia (sp?)

I would fence in your backyard before getting the dog. Most dogs enjoy being outdoors. Dogs are more aggressive if they are tied out back.
I personally think smaller breeds are best for city life and being an indoor dog. Aside from being a bit more difficult to housebreak (it varies from dog to dog).
Dachshunds are a good breed, small and intelligent. as they get older their bladder grows so they don't need to go out as often.
Make sure she is ready for a dog though it's a pet not a gift.

golden retriever or a lab or husky is best. i kno that a lot of girls that age want a lil dog that they could dress up in the dog cloths that r like @ petsmart and stuff but dogs don't like it. but golden retrievers and labs and huskys r cute 2. actually ask her what kind she wants, i'm just giving a suggestion. and is she responsible, would she hav time 2 train it and giv it attention? would she treat it well? think about it. and about the back yard thing, we hav a house that isn't fenced cuz our neighborhood doesn't allow us 2 hav fences but i don't kno y, anywaz, we hav 2 dogs and we hav this tree rite next 2 our house and a porch/stairs where we hav tied 2 very long leashs on2 the tree and porch/stairs. or u could get a steak, (this is something made for dogs, u can find it in any pet store), it goes in2 the ground and then u attach a long rope 2 it and ur dog and rome in the yard on the rope (by it's collar) and yea. chihuahua's and toy dogs r much more money than a lot of bigger dogs. i hope i helped!

I dunno if it's a good idea. It's A LOT more work than it seems. If eveybody helps it should be ok, but she won't be able to handle it, just by herself. If everyone helps, sure get one. If you're backyard is not fenced it's not really good for any dog. I have a westie. She is a small white dog. Only 12 weeks. Concider a dog like that. But they love to run so maybe it's best if u have a fenced yard for that one.
