Victoria - your mind is racing because you are stressed out. Stress is just another name for FEAR or Anxiety (long term fear). When you feel fear it causes your body to produce adrenaline. Adrenaline is the "Fight or Flight" hormone. If you ignore the stress your body keeps producing more adrenaline and your mind keeps trying to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it (your racing thoughts). If you release the stress then your racing thoughts will ease.
Please know that EMOTIONS (like fear, anxiety) are ENERGIES IN MOTION in our bodies. Emotions are meant to be FULLY FELT and then they will automatically be released from the body.
Every time you don't allow yourself or you aren't allowed to fully experience an emotion, to feel it, and to move through it, the energy of that emotion becomes stopped and blocked in your body. It remains blocked until you go back and re-experience that emotion. Then the energetic block is freed and cleared. Virtually all of our physical ailments come from energetic blocks in our bodies, energetic patterns that are connected to our emotional patterns
One good way to release fear and anxiety is by using e EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Emotional Tapping. In EFT you apply gentle acupressure tapping to specific body points to release blocked emotions. EFT is easy to learn (you can learn the basics in 15-30 minutes). You can use EFT anytime, anywhere for any emotional or physical issue. One basic round of EFT takes about one minute to complete. EFT works quickly and painlessly
Please download the FREE EFT Instructional manual from the EFT website (www.emofree.com). Also, please watch the FREE Introductory video.
There is another EFT website, Tapping.com , which has 14 FREE EFT Instructional videos. You can learn EFT today and apply it to your life right away.
I learned EFT last year and now use it everyday for EVERYTHING. Seriously, EFT really works! If you use EFT for a couple of minutes every day you will find your stress level will drop and your racing thoughts will ease.
Good luck.

a racing head could be a number of different things so it is hard to say, you should go seek professional help. But until then at night you can try to take a hot bath with some lavender oils drink a cup of decaff tea and listen to some soothing music. When I can't sleep I like classical music. Most docs say to avoid alcohol but maybe a few glass of wine might help. Try keeping a journal or record your thoughts with a small tape recorder. You might think it is silly but it helps as well. writing or talking helps sort out what is truly bothering you. I personally like to write and when I am done I burn the notebook. It's a way to show I have resolved the issues that were bothering me.
you cold smoke some Maryjane, or find some belladonna. I choose to not put man made chemicals in my body and these are nice alternatives to sleeping pills or Prozac.

If the mention of death scares you, become light. Death is darkness and you can shine through it like it's nothing at all because that's exactly what death is: nothing. Don't be afraid. You had an experience in your light body. Blessed are you for pouring yourself out before the whole world on YA. You seek the help from the omnipresent. It's time to start meditating. Find the guru that surrounds your body (call it Jesus if you want) and ask it advice. The one your brain is talking to is Jesus when it rambles on and on. Don't get caught up in what it says, but close your eyes and quietly observe your brain doing its thing. I went through a time of recurring dreams where I would fly with every step, as if the gravity of Earth was lifted by 1/10. Just go with the magic of it all. The worst thing you can do is fear. Just know that you're always in the arms of God and death can never touch you.

Generally speaking, there is nothing wrong with a "racing mind". Most of us have lots to deal with, and, with the lack of organization, the brain is sometimes overloaded causing the sensation you described. I'm an intelligent (if not humble!) individual who has LOTS of thing on his mind, so it's not unusual that I have similar sensations, quite often! And, with all due respect to your husband, thinking about "something else" will probably only add to your overloaded mind!
TV won't help, because your brain is trying to process the sights and sounds, which only adds to the "racing" (not to mention that the vapid content on the boob tube may only "fuel the racing" by adding frustration and disgust to the mix!). ;) Likewise with movies, even ones that you enjoy.
Try to resolve at least one thing that's on your mind, even if it's something of relatively little importance. That, alone, may give you a sense of accomplishment, and release the tension that's causing the racing (or vice-versa!).
For some, physical exercise might do the trick; for others, the only respite is a sleeping aid; and some find music and/or a nice hot bath to be soothing and restorative (do NOT bring anything into the tub; no books, magazines, office/homework, phones . . . NOTHING! Just close your eyes and "chill" - - oh, wait . . . I said HOT bath - - okay, then STEAM your worries away!). ;)
Another way to look at it: "Racing" beats headaches! ;)

I've read other answers to your question and literally laughed my a** off. Just had to let you know that.
My mind races all the time too 100 miles an hour in a 5 mile an hour zone, I understand - it sucks. This is what I do when I can't complete a thought. Pick up a notebook at a local store nothing fancy but lots of room to write in. Pick a partial thought that is driving you crazy. Force yourself to sit down and at the top of a clean sheet of paper write down what the partial thought is. When that is done, stay seated! Now force yourself to elaborate on that thought, if you can't finish it in your head because of all the traffic going on up there, you can certainly make yourself finish it on paper.
Good luck

on the chance that your husband is right, set aside some alone time to let the issues come out...don't try to stop it. Maybe that will help.
Otherwise, perhaps your mind races because you are trying to accomplish many tasks and don't know which one to focus on first. If that's the case, making a list in order of priority might help.
Best wishes.

You are suffering from stress and anxiety. Do you have alot going on that is stressing you out or are you needlessly worrying about everything and just cant seem to stop? Read about generalized anxiety online and maybe try looking up some relaxation techniques and give them a try. If this is affecting your life to a point that it is hard to sleep and hard to function you should talk to your doctor. I wish you the best I struggle with this myself but am putting off medications at the time because I'm breast feeding.

same thing happens to me, i just have to tell my mind to be quiet and let me rest. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, it's so bad that sometimes i have to take meds to help me sleep. Other times I just calm myself down, but taking a candle lit bubble bath, listen to some nice relaxing music, and just lie there and relax. I also had to stop watching the news every nite before bed, because i would think about all that i heard and it would worry me.

No I don't think it is. The advice to suppress it is not good advice. There are certain symptoms that go along with what you are saying, that could need medical attention. Go visit the Doc.
