I lived in New York City for 24 years. Ever hear the phrase "concrete canyon"?

You should approach a cityscape the same way you would paint natural monuments, like canyon walls and mountains. Believe me, the light hits them the same way, and the atmospheric perspective is the same. Depending on the light and the time of day, distant skycrapers will turn blue and transparent, just as if they were mountains.

What you leave out of a cityscape is just as important as what you leave in. You don't have to include every tiny window, and every car and person on the street. Simplify as much as you can.

If you still find that intimidating, I suggest doing a cityscape in the context of another type of painting. For instance, painting a room interior with the cityscape visible only through a window. I once set up a still life on a windowsill, and the brownstones and high-rises across the street were not only visible through the windows, they were reflected upside down in my wine glass. I consider it a cityscape.

Or you could focus on just a small section of a great piece of urban architecture. The light does wonderful things to the surfaces of buildings. Fire escapes throw great shadows. So do gargoyles.

go get a throwaway camera or a digital camera an take a lot of photo of a cityscape nearest you and paint that. Sometime i do that if i can't find any pictures i don't like from magazines or the web. Well good luck with your painting. ;D

Try a night view of any city skyline. That way, you only have to paint lights, without any building details.

Just use your imagination and do a panoramic view of downtown simplified like I did some years ago. Check out my landscapes on page three.
