Oh wow, what a surprise, a spanking question. Really, do people read the responses or is this just a subject brought up just for fun?
Yes, I spank. I was spanked as a child, my siblings were spanked. We grew up to be well-adjusted adults. My husband and I spank our children, only when they have done something very wrong.

No, spanking has nothing to do with DISCIPLING a child. It it a way of PUNISHING a child (or teen -- OUCH).
Discipline, disciplining, making a disciple of a Person or an ideology, etc. is done teaching, by example. It is training up a child in the ways he (she) should go. It is nurture and example and such. Try following the principles of Deuteronomy chapters 5 & 6.
When punishment is necessary ... for adults usually the government uses methods such as fines or gaol time. Between spouses I've heard that punishment often may be by withdrawal of "privileges".
Punishment of children (or teens) can be by loss of privileges (for reasonable lengths of time) or it can be by spanking. [I sure don't like being spanked!! But it is a quick way of getting a message to my brain -- via my butt!! A spanking, yes. A beating, NO!! And give your teens considerable freedom. I have to admit, though, that when a spanking is expected and deserved, it is easier to accept than a lengthy grounding! At least that is IMHO]

Absolutely. I believe in spanking a child...not abusing a child. There is a fine line between the two.
I do not believe that spanking a child teaches violence like alot of people say. Spanking should be used as discipline in cases where it is warranted. For example: if my son gets in trouble for acting up or not listening then he gets punished. Now if he gets in trouble for acting out towards a parent or teacher, or hitting another child then he will get a spanking. Trust me...he's gotten alot better with the latter.
I believe that when children are spanked they should only be spanked with a hand, belt, or paddle...period. No shoes or cords or anything like that. If you can't spank your child directly on the bottom then don't...and NEVER spank a child while your angry!!!!

I think a child needs effective discipline with spanking as a last resort.

Yes, I think that's what's wrong with kids these days, no discipline, a spank on the butt didn't stunt my growth, nor my children and I knew if I did something wrong I was going to get into trouble, my children knew the same, they were good kids (most of the time, ha ha), maybe that's why I didn't get into trouble and I can count on my hand how many times I spanked my kids, not that much. There is a difference from spanking and going to abuse, I think most people know when they gone past spanking.........

yes i do.i believe the punishment should fit what has to be addressed.i do think you should not slap or beat your child and do not spank if you are really angry because you may actually harm your child.you should never do that.spanking as a form of punishment shows a child that there are consequences to their actions and to respect their elders and also that the world does not revolve around them!!! many children today are not disciplined and have no boundaries that is why you have so many young people in trouble!!! spare the rod and spoil the child!!!! parents need to be more actively involved in their children's lives!!! if kids could take care of themselves they would not need parents!!! i do not think time outs teach a kid anything at all!!! i think lazy people use it so they do not have to deal with the real problems!!!you are not your childs friend you are a parent act like one!!!

Spare the rod, spoil the child.
Simple as that. When I say I believe in spanking, I do not mean beating. Let's get that straight, first of all.
In case anyone hasn't noticed, kids have gotten much more out of control since people started viewing spanking as "abuse" or "wrong".
When did schools get metal detectors? Oh, about the same time spankings were taken out of schools.
You shouldn't spank for every little thing..definitely not. Then again, spankings don't work on all kids. All I know is--I could walk down any street in America and see at least 5 kids who could use a good swat on the backside.

Spanking is not abuse. In fact, lots of times, if you don't spank as a way of discipline, your child may be uncontrollable later on.

If we use 'spanking' too often, it might affect the child emotionally and physically.
There's a lot of other ways that we can consider in disciplining young children. For example;
If the child did something good, immediately reinforce him - praise him, love him, hug him, give him presents, anything that will make him happy. Same thing if he did something bad - take away the things that he likes, time-out, tell him firmly that you do not like his attitude, or simply ignore him. You must take control, but in a positive way. You discipline the child, but at the same time, you show him that you love him.
Sometimes children may be very naughty, but they're just being children. We can't punish them for that. For me, I would only use 'spanking' as the last resort.
