my step dad has good credit and said he will co-sign to help me get a used car. I went to a dealership and they said that they will not accept an out of state co-signer. Are all dealerships this way?

You could probably arrange it so you could have him co-sign at a local branch of the bank or CU. Once that is done, you can car shop to your heart's content.

Would you go to a grocery story to buy health insurance? No? Then why are you asking about financing at a car lot? If it's a buy here pay lot, get out of there. Go to a bank with your cosigner information, and get the loan preapproved, then go shopping for your used car.

I agree you need to secure the loan first thru a bank or credit union. then you can find the car you want.
