I like rev kev's arguing skills a lot, even though i don't completely agree with you. thank you for not being rude mr. kev! A lot of the answers were almost desturbing. im not trying to force anything on anyone, but I dont understand why everyone feels so strongly about this. I was just wondering, and i get a bunch of crap about people saying, "i dont believe in lies" i was just wondering what your reasons were, and a lot of what i got was stuff offending me. so please, don't be rude. Santa clause was actually based on truth, just like any legendary character. dragons were probably dinosaurs, the loch ness monster was probably the last of an aquatic species, but we can never know for sure. Also, what about the fossils of small sea creatures on a mountain? Please, give me some solid arguments like mr. kevs please! and no rudeness!!

They don't have faith enough to believe in something they cannot see is real. Luckily, St. Thomas Aquinas came up with 5 ways to prove God exists using reason alone:

1) Aguement of motion: Everything is set into motion by something else, but some unmoved mover had to set the first object into motion. This unmoved mover is God
2) Causation of existence: Everything was caused by something else. We were caused by our parents, and likewise an uncaused first cause caused what came after to exist. This uncaused first cause is God.
3) Necessary Objects: There are contingent beings and necessary beings. All contingent beings were brought into existence by a necessary being. All contingent beings were created by a necessary being. There had to be a necessary being that was always there to create the first contingent being. This necessary object is God.
4) Degree of perfection: We all have had some desire to be perfect. Therefore, there must be a degree of complete perfection out there somewhere. This degree of perfection is God.
5) Intelligent designer: Common sense tells us that nature has an intelligent design. Therefore an intelligent designer must have come up with the design for nature. This Intelligent designer is God.

These are the five proofs that God exists without use of faith.
Note that proofs use reason alone, no faith involved.

The Earth has been around about 4 1/2 billion years. The dinosaurs roamed the earth for 165 million years. That isn't even 1/40 of the time the earth has been around. In that time the structure of the planet has change a lot. What are now mountains used to be rain forest as far as you can imagine. What is now desert was once ocean. These are things to consider. The universe itself is expanding. Think about physics for a second. When something expands that means it had a starting point. When it expands enough it will then start to contract. Scientist are able to show us that the universe is expanding. That should indicate that there is a central point to the expanding universe..... the point of the big bang.

Science can prove to me that gravity exist. It can prove to me that light enters a black hole but doesn't escape it. Science can not prove to me that God exists. Without proof, I do not believe. I know man kind too well to just have faith that a 2000 year old story is true. Man lies and deceives for his own benefit.

You are right, Santa was based on some truth. Jesus probably was as well. So was Budda. I believe, but I could be off on the time frame, Jesus's teachings were not even put down on paper until about 300 years after his death. Now how much of that do you think could actually be accurate after 300 years. I think they said this is what we want people to believe, they love the idea of this Jesus guy so we'll use his name.

What Sea fossils on Mountain tops? Which Mountain? Some Mountains used to be the sea floor. Please before you make a statement, research it. Do not just take someone elses word. This makes it 2nd hand knowledge. Many people reply with rude responses because they have an intense dislike of organized religion. Organized religion does use lies to control people. A lot of us have a hard time believing in ANY God not just yours. How is it so easy for you to discount every other God that Man has worshipped?

"Santa clause was actually based on truth, just like any legendary character. dragons were probably dinosaurs, the loch ness monster was probably the last of an aquatic species, but we can never know for sure."

Saint Nicholas didn't ride around in a sleigh pulled by 8 tiny reindeer, nor did he have a toy workshop in the North Pole.

Dragons never existed, much like your God. As far as Nessie is concerned, she's probably a dinosaur who survived the last ice age and has a family living in the Loch.

This doesn't prove your God exists....

Nice try.....

Well, most christians believe, that god exists, and jesus is the son of god put into mary, jesus' virgin mother, Even though it sounds completely absurd, people believe in the existance of a higher order, a higher destination, where as this life is just training for life to come.

Many christian's I believe are scared into believing that jesus is their saviour, because as they grew up their parents taught them, if you don't love jesus, then you burn in hell. So they may just be christians because they don't want to go to hell (which I have had this discussion with some christians and that was their answer, practically anyway).

This isn't a hit on christians as everybody has the right to believe whatever and however they want. MOST religions revolving around one or many gods.

But it isn't only because of fear that people become believers, people also start believing in god to give them a sence of hope that somehow they'll get through whatever ordeal is passed their way. And the IDEA of a god helps people cope with losses, both emotional and physical.

When a family member dies, most people would feel some closure thinking their family member is in heaven, or was reborn.

When you can't pay the rent and you're set to get evicted, non believers start praying because they hope it'll help their inevitable eviction...

Religion isn't only about hope as it is about morality, someone with good morals doesn't kill someone, doesn't steal from someone. Religions teach these lessons in forms of made up situations..

Such as the "Rain for 40 days and 40 nights", the flooding, This is a story of moral not a story of factual occurances. A man, told by 'his father (as said in the bible)' to build an arc and load up 2 animals of every species. And even though the story was rediculous he did what he was told.

Adam and Eve eating the apple from the tree, means don't fall victim to pressure or temptation.

These religions are not only hopeful but also moral, so if someone chooses to believe in god, and you don't, then believe that that person would most likely be a good person, since he has morals in a book which he reads daily.

Hope I helped clarify anything,

Well, why don't you tell me why you believe in God? Sorry, but just like you can't understand why I don't, I don't understand why you do, and believe me, I tried. With all the scientific evidence shoved in your face every single day, how could you just blatantly ignore it? I believe in evolution because it makes sense. Sorry, I believe it makes more sense than someone sitting on a cloud and creating everything with a wave of the hands and a simple command. I don't deny some of the stories in the Bible, but I just can't believe in a God or intelligent design. With the simple things that happen these days by accident, why couldn't we? People who say "life could never happen by pure chance," how do you know? How do people know that it didn't take trillions and trillions of years to even get the right chemicals together to make Earth, and that everything didn't just sort of happen from there?

Evolution is happening everyday, also. People are actually changing and becoming bigger. Simple species are being created everyday. New viruses are being created and old ones are becoming immune to current medications. You just can't ignore it. That's why I don't believe in God. Because the contradictions are just too hard to ignore.

I think most people grow up to be religious b/c their parents are. Neither of my parents are and neither am I. Also, Religion is based on faith. 'Proof denies faith and without faith I am nothing.' So therefore by his own admission, God told us he does not exist without faith, so if everyone stopped believing, God would simply not exist. Have you read the Bible cover to cover? I have only read the first few pages, but- how can there be two different stories of the Creation of woman? One is from Adam's rib, and the other is from the dust of the earth. If it is God's word, how does that make sense? Also, Adam and Eve had only 2 children, boys. Then how could one of them all of a sudden have a wife, and then their children have a wife? There is no mention of God creating another woman, nor of Adam and Eve having another child. I hope that this could have given you a strong argument. And science, to me explains things much more thoroughly, like DNA and chemistry and all that. And unless you dislike joking about religion, I suggest trying to read the hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams. I hope you enjoy.

Solid argument? You can't prove a negative. There is not one shred of evidence that there exists some magical being somewhere outside of this universe, unbounded by time with an infinite lifespan. The whole concept of eternity, whether applied to such a being or to the wishful thinking of an afterlife, is absurd. If something has existed for eternity, how did it ever get to the present day when there are an infinite number of years preceding this point in time?

I dont believe because I think that "back in the day," people could not explain how ANYTHING happened, so they simply said, "Well, some powerful titan or God must have done all this and created us and everything." OR something along these lines.

Now, there is solid proof of evolution (Darwin's studies) and I have actually read (where, I dont remeber) that they have recorded sounds of the "Big Bang's" echoes.

I just don't see how there can be some powerful being that created EVERYTHING, including Himself...

There are many different reasons to disbelieve. Some never find thier Faith, some find it and lose it as they experience the unremitting evils of the world, and grow to doubt that a benign, omnipotent God would have created such a world. That latter is why you find some people who say they don't believe in God, but do believe in the Devil. OTOH, some people are simply rationalistic to the point that they don't accept the spiritual at all.
