It's a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be treated (not cured) with medication. Basically, the brain sends out impulses more quickly than usual and causes the person not to be able to maintain focus for a lengthy amount of time. The person is easily distracted and becomes bored at a quicker pace than others.
My friend has ADD and it was quite obvious that he had it when we were younger, but, now that he's older, he has it somewhat under control. It's not because his ADD went away or lessened - it's because now he's an adult and knows that he has to remain focused and on task and the like. He still has trouble focusing at times, but, he now knows why and will make himself refocus and keep working.

a chemical imbalance wich can cause a person to not be able to focus on tasks. ADHD (Attention Deficite Hyperactivity Disorder) is very similar but inclludes hyperactive behavior, impulsive behavior and attention issues. A person can have only one symptom or all 3. My stepson is highly impulsive and mildly hyper, but has no trouble focusing. (He was diagnosed after "his brain told him" to cut off a little girl's ponytail.)
Treatment is usually "uppers" like ritalin or adderall, because they work oppositely as they would on a person without the disorder due to the chemical imbalance. If a person diagnosed with ADD/ADHD gets more hyper from these drugs, there's a good chance they were misdiagnosed. And be careful with the "non-speed" drugs...they could have some pretty nasty emotional side effects. if you find the right drug, stick with it. don't let the doctor tell you about this great new drug...it's just the drug reps pushing him to write more scripts for something that may not be right. good luck

It is a neurological development disorder that usually starts in childhood. It is characterized by an inability to pay attention, frequently distracted, hyperactivity, etc (only some symptoms may be present).
The exact cause is unknown. It is likely that several different causal conditions can cause symptoms that are classified as ADD. (ADD is probably not just a single disorder).

I think that other posters have addressed the issue so I will give an answer to the question from one of the posters. Why do people give a thumbs down on this subject ...due to their own ignorance. Obviously they have no experience with a child with ADD or they would try to be a little understanding.I'mwaiting for my thumbs down.I figure a thumbs down can mean I hit a nerve.Oh well , you can't please them all. I hope that answers the question regarding thumbs down.

It's a dopamine deficiency leading to a decreased ability to stay focused.
Edit: What's up with the thumbs-down? Nothing but fact here.
