I have sporadic pain on the sides of my finger tips. This never goes above the first joint from the nail but the pain is EXTREME. It is not seasonal but it does come and go. Some days its fine other days its horrible with no noticeable difference between the days. Pain is always on the sides, never on the top or bottom but when I touch/hit pain goes trough the finger and puts me on my knees. I have a high pain tollerance but this is more than I can take. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Both my MD and Joint Dr have no idea what it is and don't seem to care to much.

I'm only 21. Is it really Venutian Arthritis? Could you provide a link on info?

I don't really notice a difference in color. This generally only happens in my left hand and it does show the white marks suggesting I am getting insufficient amounts of iron/w/e.

Usually I would say you are mistaken but in this case you're not. The pain does not register on top of the finger because of your nail. It does not register at the tip of your finger because the nail does not extend that far. It does register on the sides - and I'm willing to bet starting at your cuticle and extending downward towards your finger print but not so far that the pain registers there.

The next question is have you noticed a VERY slight change in color of your finger nails from when it does not hurt to when it does? It could either be whiter, a tint of blue or a deeper red color under the nails. Again, I am willing to wager that you have a fungus under the nails. Forget the Joint Dr. and ask your MD (if he's a General Practitioner - not a specialist. Unless, of course, he's a dermatologist) to scrape under the nails and check for any common nail fungus. If he's not a GP then you should seek out a Dermatologist anyway.

Check it out. You've got nothing to lose.

Its possible that something is compressing one or more nerves in your hand. A compressed nerve anywhere from your spine down to the last knuckle could cause this problem. Nerve compression can be diagnosed by blocking the nerves at the most distant joint, and then sequentially blocking the nerve at points closer to the spine. Nerves to the fingers commonly get compressed at the wrist, elbow, upper arm, and at the spine. Pain limited to only to the sides of the fingers is unusual with a compressed nerve, so it could be some other type of nerve damage. You probably need to visit a neurologist to diagnose this problem.

Venutian Arthritis!

There are OTC medications like ALEVE that may help you with the pain..but check with a CARING doctor before taking any medications.

I'm not a doctor..

I was kidding about it VEnutian... I was suggesting that you might be arthritic..

I can't believe your DRs don't take this serious.. if you're in that much pain...you might want to consider going to the ER and have them check it out. I hope you have insurance..or are covered by your parents still.

You'll likely get an MRI or CATSCAN of your hand..all which are very expensive procedures...
