As a new Christian I started out with the NIT (New Living Translation). Its very easy to understand, but may not be quite the exact wording of the orginial meaning of the Bible. I went out to get one that is closest to the orginial one, which is the the KJV (King James Version), which is harder to read (because its not written in modern english, like today), but if you are a Christian, God will help you understand it, thru the Holy Spirit.
I also found out a web-site that has recordings of the orginial Bible text (and its meaning), and some parts of it was changed completely to mean something else over the years, in the other translations.
God helped me understand what part of His word, is true and what isn't, but leading me to the original (oldest) version found, and not was not translated so many times, by other religious scholars. Do not trust everything the last Bible version of today, but go back to find the oldest one like I did.
So, now I am comparing and studying these two versions of the Bible (NIT, KJV, with the old Bible text on a web-site). I would recommend buying 2 different ones, and compare the two with the old Bible text on-line (that I found). In all those Bible versions that you see out there, you will find what is true and what isn't, when Scriptural meanings contradict itself. God will reveal the Truth to you, when you read His word and ask Him to guide you in Truth, from His word (Bible). He always does for me (in the end, when I seek His spiritual guidance) when I have a hard time understanding something or not know something.
Please know: Do not worry, if you happen to get one that does not quite suit you (for you may need more than 1 Bible to compare). My best advice is to allow God to help you understand the Scriptures in the Bible, when you read any version of a Bible. If you truly want to seek the truth about God's word, He will guide you and help you understand the Bible, and lead you in all Truth. Trust me, He will.

Personall, I recommend the New King James Version. Here's why. Whenever the King James Versin was translated into English, The Catholic Church (not knocking them, it's just part of the history) was very upset about the people being able to read it for themselves. But, the translaters were so comitted to getting the scriptures into the common man's hands, that they risked torture, exile, and even death to complete it. They were not paid, they were not given academic accolades, they were doing it for the Love of the Father, and for his word.
Compared to the versions today. Many of them were put together by liberal comittees, and were based, not off the original manuscripts, but from a translation done back in the 60's. For instance, they say that this will be a miraculous sign, that a youn maiden will give birth to a son. What Kind of sighn is that! Maidens give birth to sons every day! It translates virgin in every text that has been found so far. KJV has it's flaws, and they are well documented. Namely that our language has changed a bit since King James was on the throne, hence, the New King James Version.
Hope that helps. And for a study Bible, I reccomend The Word for Today Bible. You can get it on the word for today website, or most Bible Bookstores.

I really like The Amplified for Studying. I also like the Complete Jewish Bible that give cultural light to the interpretation of Scripture. You also want to get a good concordance, I suggest Strong's, but there are many out there. I'm not crazy about the NIV. I think it oversimplifies and it leaves some entire scripture passages out. The message bible is good too, but not for in-depth study, in my opinion. I hope this has helped. God Bless you too.

If you're a new to the bible, I encourage you to get the NIV (the new international version). The NIV is writen in plain day to day English. However, you will realize that many pastors and preachers use the King James Version. But for a beginner, I would recommend the NIV. If you want to have a King James version, the New King James Version (NKJV) is something to get because the English used in it is also more modern. In the traditional king James version, the English is the old type that has " hath, begeth.... etc" and that can be quite confusing when one is trying to decipheer what scriptures is saying..
God bless you as you learn scriptures to get close to him.

Any Bible that you will read and follow is a good Bible. If you want a complete Bible, get a Catholic version like St. Jerome or New American. The Protestant versions are missing 7 books.

Dear Friend,
I am sure with all the answers you'll receive...it can get quite overwhelming.
I do not know what Bible you are currently studing from, in order to guide you to another. However, I recommend a couple of things. 1. Talk this matter over with your pastor, or mature growing Christians in your church. 2. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you my friend. He is your "Teacher"...and He will guide you to the "next" level.
I don't know if I've been of any help to you. But I do know, that when your ready to advance into holiness... Your best counselor/teacher/protector...is the Holy Spirit Himself.
Blessings in Christ Jesus,
lostnsavd
For my own personal use however, I use the KJV/Amplified Parallel Bible by Zondervan

God says that it is wrong to take away from the words of the Bible...so I would suggest the KJV. That is what I have and once you start studying it, you will understand what things mean and they will make sense to you...Good luck and God Bless!!

I like various versions actually. The Message puts it in modern-day terms for a person which I like. Reading different versions helps a person to understand the Word of God better. Here is a good website for you to check out that has all the versions in lots of languages too! This website is known to many Christians:
