The least of these are the lowest of humanity..The ones that the average person turns away from.. Jesus loves them, not just the pretty, nice and good ones..

In general, especially in Reading the previous verses it means people in need. You know whatever we do we should do as unto the Lord. And whatever we do as unto the Lord, the Lord will reward us for it. So important that we be interested in people around us, in the needs of people around us. How can I say that the love of God dwells in my heart, if I close up my heart to the needs of people?

Do ALL that you do and to whom you do It for, as unto the Lord.
If you see a homeless person and all you give him Is a Bible, then you've lacked In clothing and feeding him.
No man lives unto himself.
When you visit someone In jail and offer prayer or salvation, you've done It to Jesus.
Easy rule of thumb:
Whatever you do ...Do It as If you were doing or giving It to Jesus Himself.

The term refers to people in society that we think of poorly.

We might view the poor as less than acceptable. We may avoid people who are on drugs. We may look down on the uneducated.

Some folks dislike car salesmen and of course, who likes tax collectors, even in today's world.

These are the people Jesus is referring to. When we treat these people badly, it is regarded as treating Jesus himself badly because all people, regardless of their worldly status in life are equal in the sight of God.

Especially when they have accepted Christ. They may still suffer with their various issues, but they are equal to everyone else in their inheritance of salvation.

What He's saying is that the way you treat others, no matter what their position in life, even if they are at the very bottom of the "totem pole", so to speak, even a bum on the street, the way you treat other people reflects your attitude towards God.

I never really understood the meaning of this verse. I think it means helping someone who has less then, and if that is the case I have helped many times.

Think of a person who bugs the holy heck out of you -- somebody you want to throttle -- somebody whose every political, religious, and philosophical opinion grates your very being: That person is "the least of these." The ones that are hardest to love. Whatever we do to them, how we treat them, how we minister to them, is what we do to Jesus Himself.
