One of the major problems I have had with Christianity is its view of women. God is portrayed as male, Jesus is a man and he had twelve male apostles. A woman (Eve) is blamed for the fall. And here are some scriptures for you:

1 Corinthians 11:3
3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

1 Corinthians 11:7 – 9
“7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. “

1 Corinthians 14:34 – 35
34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

1 Timothy 2:11-15
11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[a] will be saved[b] through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Ephesians 5:22-24:
22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

colossians 3:18
18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

To me, this is nothing but an attempt to justify a patriarchal system. Men are not superior to women, and I see no justification for men "ruling over" women, or being the head of the household.

What is your response to this?

It's always been one of the things that has bothered me about Christianity as well. I've heard Jesus was all about equality for women, but his teachings were twisted and manipulated. I don't know how true that is, and have no sources to check.

I was always bothered by the image of God as a man. I enjoy images of the Goddess, just as a connection to female divinity. But I believe, if there is an ultimate deity, it is neither male nor female. It is probably not anthropomorphic at all.

Well, first of all, God is above gender, being perfectly self-sufficent. However, He has chosen to reveal Himself to us as male. Not really my place to tell God how He should relate to us.

Second, and Christians get this wrong all the time as well, a careful reading of the Scripture will reveal that Adam was at fault. He was present during Satan's accusations and did not correct him or stop Eve from eating the forbidden fruit. That is why all Mankind sinned in Adam, not just Eve.

While the passages in 1st Cor points out your position, it does not cover the full story. Read Eph 5 & 6 as well. In it, you will see that the marriage relationship is supposed to mirror the relationship between God and the Church. In reading these passages, I found, much to my chegrin, that my God-appointed responsibility to my wife is to be in a constant state of self-sacrifice on behalf of my wife & children. I am supposed to do everything with her best interests in mind even and especially when those interests are not my best interests. It is only by doing this that she can submit to my authority.

Finally, and I am sure you will agree, that of all the religions of the time, Christianity is the least anti-woman. For most of history (and still in many parts of the world) women are considered little more than property. But in Christianity, woman are elevated to an equal position with men in the eyes of God. Granted, we are given different responsibilities, but women are held in such high esteem that it was scandalous in the 1st century.

Your question is too long to make a debate of this right now.
When we pick and choose Scripture but neglect others that will help you understand this, you lean on your own understanding, not the wisdom of God.
As one man said, a two headed person is a freak. By this, he was insinuating is SOMEONE has to be the head of a structure, esp. family. Paul made mention that since the serpent deceived Eve first, not Adam, than the husband would be the covering, or spiritual authority for the family.
No where does it say that men are better, but woman was created from man,
There is much more but time is short.

Eve was not blamed for the fall it was her husband(Adam) that God charged it to. Women are the weaker vessels look at how easily it was for Eve to be deceived by Satan. God also told Eve because you have done this, you will have pain during childbirth and your desires should only be for your husband and he will rule over you. That is why the man is head of the household and makes all the final decisions and his wife is the help meet. We as women get “caught up” and it takes the strong mentally of her husband to ensure their household, money, kids and whatever else is being handled because God designed it that way.

The bible lays out "rules of order" for a good Christian life.

One of the rules is simply that the Christian guys have the responsibility of leadership. Leadership is a heavy burden, and a Christian man is supposed to listen to his wife, and take her opinions above his own in making his leadership decisions.

Ultimately, however, he makes the final decisions regarding where his family is headed, and his wife and children are expected to follow his lead. That man also carries the responsibility and accountability (to God) for his decisions.

A Christian woman is expected to share her opinions, wants and desires with her husband so he can make appropriate decisions. She is expected to understand that her husband will listen to her. If his decision is not exactly what she wanted, she is expected to follow his lead, and give it her best.

In the event that the husband was incorrect, the husband is expected to apologize and fix the situation. The wife is expected to support her husband.

When I counsel couples, I simplify this by saying the Husband's job is to gather all the information he can and agonize over the decision, and make the one that is best for his wife and family, keeping his own wants and desires last on the list.

The wife's job is to support her husband in any way she can, and give all her best efforts to fulfilling the decisions of her husband.

A husband may not browbeat his wife or use intimidation, because that is not showing love.

A wife is not to ridicule her husband, because that is not showing respect.

As for the church and women, the only thing women are not to do is act in leadership, since the guys were given that task.

Women, in the bible were known to pray, prophesize, teach, and do all sorts of work.

In Acts, chapter 18, we see that there was a man named Apollos who was preaching, but was innacurate in some of his teachings. Priscilla heard this, but rather than make a big fuss, she went to her husband Aquila. Aquila then went to Apollos and took him aside where he and Priscilla corrected him and gave him clearer understanding so he could continue preaching.

Priscilla did exactly as the Bible instructed her. She didn't try to take a leadership role and correct Apollos, regarded as a leader, by herself.

She went home to her own husband, and let him lead to a solution that everyone was happy with. And she actively participated in the solution, by the way.

Its very clear you`ve never been to a church.....when last have you been some where near a church?
Is the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Jesus not revered and worshipped in churches as the Mother of God.
Go and see for yourself now, it is the women who take the lead in church. There is no prayer without them, there is no choir without them, the melodius voices heard in the church are womens. Nuns give out communions when crowds are big. It shows they are even touching the body of Christ.

Woman was made of man, for man, as a helpmate. Man is in submission to God and woman to man. God blessed the woman because she would be the vessel that would born the savior of the world.

It just happens that God and Jesus are males. There is nothing wrong with that. It is just who they are. Women are considered equally as important as men. Just open your eyes. Women are much more free in the Christian Countries. Mary was the Mother of Jesus and Jesus appeared to women first. The only reason that you do not understand scripture is because you do not have the Holy Spirit living in you, You can if you would turn from your sins and receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

As a Christian woman who is married, these scriptures are fine so long as the husband doesnt abuse his position.

The stuff that you quoted goes on to say "Husbands LOVE your wives as Christ loves the church" which is about as sacrificial a love as any human being can have.

When my husband loves me like that, its my JOY to submit to his lead. Whatever he wants....my desire is for him.
