If a pine tree forest can change the environment to make it more suitable for a maple forest than a pine forest, how does it do this?

Pines can grow in areas with little soil. After a pine forest has been around for awhile, the cycle of growth and decay will cause more soil to build up and allow trees like maples to grow.
