Why not purchase a pipe and wire detector from your local DIY shop and check that there are no cables where you intend to hammer a nail into the wall. As a rule, never put a nail vertically above or below a switch or a socket. It is possible for a socket cable to come vertically down from the loft and then under the ground floor boards to the other sockets in the ring.

The wires may go up or down or left or right or across. A metal detector or an detector of alternating current should be used to locate where the wire is hidden. I would advise you yo leave this job to a certified electrician.

Yes, they do go across and up-and-down. At most residential installations, they will wire UP or down a little to secure the wire, then bore a hole on studs and go across.

It is rare in US to use conduit for residential applications.

You can get mini detectors that you run across the wall and the tell you if there is metal (wire or pipe) or a piece of wood. Very useful.
