From experience it is very painful. They wont put you to sleep bc the risk of the anesthia is more than the few mins of pain you will feel. You may be able to ask for something like IV ativan which is commonly used to calm the patient down... they cant get anywere near me with that equipment without it.

You will feel some stinging as they begin to numb you. Some people say the numbing is what hurts the worst. When they pull the bone marrow out you will feel this awful pain that I cannot even begin to describe all the way from your toes up your leg through your hip, and sometimes even up higher through the rest of your body. It will only last a few seconds though.

You will feel more pressure than pain as they cut out a peice of the bone, but there will be some pain, much less than pulling out the marrow.

edit..
It seems as though younger patients may be put to sleep. And I have heard this before. But I have never heard of an adult patient being put to sleep.

I have had 5 bone marrow biopsies done in the last 4 years. I have had dental work done that hurt more than the bone marrow biopsy. With lot's of freezing, you only feel some pain for about 20-30 secs. You can tolerate the pain. Once it is done there is no more pain. Why take the risk and expense of putting the patient to sleep.

My son has had this done a few times as a Day Surgery patient and every single time it was done he was asleep. After the procedure he was given tylenol with codeine but was fine later in the day. He never experienced very little if any pain.

Not sure why you cannot make a request to be put to sleep if that is what you want. Usually they want you to be comfortable.
I am also unsure why this is considered painful as you will be given as much pain medication as you need to control anything you feel. Most peculiar.

I've had bone marrow biopsies....all my oncologist did was numb the area and give me a couple "happy pills" to make me relax....and to be perfectly honest....I did NOT feel a thing. No need for general anesthesia.

I've even had my port implanted and multiple biopsies without general anesthetic...just "twilight sedation", and all went well.

Please don't fret....it's not as bad as you hear.

I think it depends on your age because I had a bone marrow biopsy done when I was 7 and I was completely out!

I am a cancer nurse. I have no idea why they dont put all patients to sleep for this procedure. I think they just dont get it.
I have seen some pretty horrific reactions to this procedure and I think if you are going to have it done, you should request some IV sedation.

I do not understand either. I had a biopsy of my UTERUS in which they used NO ANESTHESA, NOT EVEN A LOCAL. They just ripped the flesh out of my body and left me to bleed and cramp for two days. I was told to take Tylenol.

Personally, I think it is cruel and painful and must have something to do with what HMO's will and will not cover!!! PATHETIC!!! I'm sorry!! I bet you can find another doctor who will make sure you feel nothing during the process!!!!

I can't answer your question specifically, but in general you're not put to sleep for an operation unless it's really necessary, because there is always a risk with a general anaesthetic.

Hope it goes well for you.
