NEED HELP!!! I have five inside cats, two are older cats and three are kittens (about five months old). The cats won’t seem to stay off of the tables and TV. I have been squirting them with water every time they get on there, but we work 12 hours a day and the second we leave they are on the tables. Is there any way to keep them from getting on the tables or should I just keep with what I’m doing? Thanks.

Put fresh grapefruit peels around where you don't want them. The scent is so strong they run away from it. Its a short term fix though.

My cats do the same thing but it's okay in my book. I let them do what they want. They're spoiled like that. That's tough when you both work such long hours. Definitely keep using the water bottle, that will have some effect and if you do it enough hopefully they will get the message. It will be easier with the kittens as they are not set in their ways yet and are still learning. The older cats may be a problem. I'm sure we all can relate....aren't habits hard to break? Just keep working with them, it will take some time. Good Luck.

What you're doing is fine but there is another trick you can try.

Get an empty coffee can and put just 5 or 10 pennies in it. Keep it near the tv or table the offend on the most. The second the jump for the table or tv, shake that can hard. The noise will startle them and they'll take off for a hiding place. If you do this enough times, they will think it is caused by jumping on the table or tv and will stop.

You know about those plastic carpert covers that have the plastic spikes at the bottom side? Those work great. You can pick some up at walmart and put them on the TV and table upside-down. Take them off only when you use the table or TV, when you are done, put them back on. The cats will think that unpleasant enough to stop getting on the table. You only need to keep them on for a few weeks.

Good luck with that one.I trained my one cat from birth not to do that stuff, (I have his mother too) and I never saw him climbing on counters or tables then one day my boyfriend told me he saw my cats on the tables all the time and that theyd get up there when I wasnt looking. So I told my BF to smack my cat on the bottom when he does that,(which is the only way my cat will listen cause he likes the water ) so spraying him doesnt work.Well since my BF wont spank the cat the cat now believes its ok to do this but once he sees me walk into the room with the fly swatter he gets down real quick.

Some time while you have had them it was ok for them to get on tvs and tables. This is a learned behaviour. You will have to either make a noise to scare them or constantly push them off forcefully. Not hurt them. If they sense you are not serious they will not adhere to whatever it is you want them to do. If you are consistant, then and only then will they start to stop. But since they have done this before and no one got on them in the beginning they are persistant. So now you need to let them know that you are going to be persistant in making them stay on the floor.

I had the same trouble with my cat when he was younger and the one thing that worked for me was leaving orange peels on and around the table. cats hate the smell and they often run the other way. Another way is to mix some distiled vinger with a small amount of water in to a spray bottle and spray them just like you been doing. They seem to hate the smell of vinger too. Good luck

Put aluminum foil over the tables. They won't like the slick texture on the sound it makes. (Crinkle it, then flatten it out and wrap the ends of the foil around the edges of the table to hold it in place.)
This will work while you aren't home and in a couple of weeks, they will be so accustomed to the foil, they will avoid the tables voluntarily. If somebody slips and and gets on the tables again, you can re-train them with more foil.

Just about anything with a citrus scent should work. Wipe your table down with Orange Glo or something similar.

I’ve also heard that you can put disposable aluminum pie pans on the surface you want them to stay off of. The idea is they jump, knock the stuff on the floor, and the noise scares them.

Your doing the only thing you can, short of locking them in one room while your gone. But with you working such long hours it's gonna be a pain in the $%# to keep them off the table.
