How could Ethan have known this fact without God having revealed it to Joseph yet? Do you think that he was like the reformers, who "helped get the world ready" for the restoration?

Ethan Smith was also a pious clergyman... In fact, in a completely unrelated coincidence, he was actually the pastor of Oliver Cowdery and family's congregation the 5 years preceding Cowdery's work with Smith on the translation of the BoM.

I think that is where Joseph Smith got the idea for the Book of Mormon from.

I remember reading about this guy a few years ago, I think it is entirely possible for Ethan to been inspired. The difference between the two is Joseph Smith has only accounted for the Tribe of Joseph which consists of Ephriam and Mannassah. While Views of the Hebrews says that they are the10 tribes of Israel.

Sure, I would say that he was inspired. There have been many times in the past when various people have been inspired, even during the "dark ages"; this includes certain individuals such as the reformers as you point out. Martin Luther recognized that there was something amiss in Catholicism, which started the ball rolling. I would also say that Roger Williams (1603-1683) was inspired when he said "There is no regularly constituted church of Christ on earth, nor any person qualified to administer any church ordinances; nor can there be until new apostles are sent by the Great Head of the Church for whose coming I am seeking." (Picturesque America, p. 502.)

We are all entitled to personal revelation. Ethan Smith could have come to this conclusion that according to the article, was a popular belief of the time. He could have prayed about it and recieved a witness from the Lord, that it was at least partially true.
Joseph Smith was not the only person entitled to revelation. He was just the person the Lord chose to bring the gospel back to the earth and connect all the pieces.

From reading the article, it doesn't really sound like Ethan "knew" that the Native Americans were descended from Hebrews, but it was a theory he had developed.
However, it sounds like he might have been inspired. But it doesn't look like he had much of an influence on the world in helping prepare the way for the resoration.

Ethan Smith seems to have opinions of the lost tribes that were common at the time. I do not see anything in the article about Jesus Christ. This is the principle difference with the Book of Mormon. It is Christ centered, not history centered.

He was no more inspired than Joseph Smith was when he copied from it and the Bible to make the Book of Mormon! Neither are prophets of God.

A lot of things, including the reformation and the masons and the Constitution, helped prepare for the restoration.

No, it's common sense. most of the world is from the 10 tribes of isreal. have you read the bible. that's all it talks about. He understood that concept and he didn't need mormon belief to understand that either. most of europe is from the 10 tribes too.
