Actually, there are plenty of wars NOT fought over religion. In England we had the Wars of the Roses. Fought not because of religion, but because of arguements between the royal families of the time, over land, wealth, titles etc. In fact, a lot more wars around the globe have been fought of land and possessions than religion. Only recently has religion become as much of a cop out excuse for a war as it was when the crusades were happening.

Let's see.

Gulf war I and II werent about religion -- they were about oil.

Vietnam war was about politics.

Korean war -- politics.

WWII -- basically a response to Germany's economy after WWI.

WWI -- too much political intrigue and too many egos.

Spanish-American war were a difference of opinion over Cuba.

American civil war was about the south not liking the north pushing them around politically.

War of 1812 between the US and Britain was fallout from British war with France.

American Revolution was about politics.

So far in that list, none of these wars was about religion.

The American Civil War, the American revolution, Vietnam, World War 1, and (mostly) World War 2 are just a very few examples (the persecution of the jews was only a subsequent event, not the reason). War was fought more over land and independence than religion in history.

Yes. The two wars in Iraq. Most wars were caused for reasons other than religion. The number one reason for wars is the need for resources.

Yes, but not many. The war we are fighting now in Iraq is over oil, not religion. Some might argue though, that it is a "holy war". You know, kind of Islam against Christianity. But mainly it is about the oil.
