If I have an HD receiver do I also need an HD tv?

It'll give you the best picture, but no.

You can watch HD programs via an HD receiver on a standard TV. In fact, the picture is muuuuch better than standard programing. However, to fully appreciate an HD program, you need an HD TV.

I watch HD movie channels all the time on my standard TV. Its like watching a DVD.
