My 12-year-old son wants to dress as a girl for Halloween. He's always on the honor roll, has plenty of friends, and is always a happy smiling kid. He loves sports and has always been "all-boy". His father is out of the picture and has been for 10 years.

My son told me he thinks it'd be funny to go as a girl this year. I haven't acted like I thought it was strange and have gone along with it. I even took him to the mall a couple of days ago and bought him a pink frilly dress. Should I actually let him wear it to school (for their Halloween costume day) and for Halloween? Is this peculiar or is it just a normal kid trying to be outrageous and funny?

Thanks.

It's Halloween, if your son wants to dress-up as a girl, you should let him. Since he thinks it'd be fun to be a girl, let him see what it's like to be a girl and let him wear his costume to school for their party and for Halloween also.

My husband once dressed as a girl for Halloween (he was fourteen at the time). He's a normal, very heterosexual guy. He just thought it was funny. It was. He made a lovely girl.

When I was in school, there were a few situations where guys would dress in drag. At a pep-rally, they dressed as cheerleaders and did a spoof of the actual cheerleaders.

The way I see it, if your son is secure enough to actually go to school dressed as a girl for a joke on Halloween, more power to him. That's a positive thing. Most guys would be too worried about the response they could get to actually go through with it.

By the way, this is a little off-topic, but many gay men or cross-dressers are intelligent (on the honor roll), have friends, are happy and smiling. Some even love sports. My point is, if there were more to it than wanting to be outrageous on Halloween, it doesn't really have anything to do with those qualities.

I would probably support him on this choice but I would want to ask him a few questions. What are his friends going to wear? What would they think of him dressing as a girl? And check with someone at the school to make sure there isn't any restrictions on costumes which may prohibit him from crossdressing for Halloween. Then I would also provide a "Plan B" in case he backs out at the last minute.

Let him pick the girl clothes he thinks he could use for school. And then offer some help with articles he might not be familiar with. Is he going to need a wig? women's shoes? woman's undergarments? will he need a girdle to keep his male parts from showing through?

Then provide a Plan B costume. Tell him its just in case things don't work out with the gir costume. When you try to do something outrageous then you often need a back-up.

I would let him. If this is the first incident that makes you worry than i would say give it more time. This is him dressing up for fun, therefore he isn't really taking it serious. He wants to get a laugh out of his friends. And when i was in high school some of the guys dressed up in womens clothes, so i think its just a guy thing. They trying to be funny no matter what. Don't push him to be manly just yet. Let him be who he is........and love him no matter what. As a parent, thats all you can do.

That's perfectly normal for Halloween! A lot of people think it's funny to dress up as the opposite sex for the holiday, and he's not the first boy to have the idea and follow through with it.

Seems like it should be fine. He may be a bit young for it, but lots of kids dress as the opposite sex on Halloween.

Make it as garishly girlie as possible, with a pink frilly dress and a curly blond wig and heavy makeup so that its a costume and not a cross-dress dress-up.

Now, if he does it again, or starts wearing your clothes... then I'd worry.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I think it is fine. It is sorta funny too. Just let him be a kid, I am sure it doesn't mean he is gay, if that is what you are worried about (and even so, you should love him anyway). Lots and LOTS of guys at our HIGH SCHOOL did that as a joke. It really is funny. Just go along with it and help him find better ways to dress it up. Like clip on earrings or bangels.

Why not, its halloween. He will have fun, my friends daughter went as a baby last year and is doing the same thing this year. She had the whole baby costume even wore a real disposable diaper and wore it to school for a halloween party. She had fun and he will too. Let him do it.

I'd guess that he wants to be outrageous and hasn't thought it through too well. Are any other of his friends gonna join him in this potentially embarrassing behavior? Will he be the only one that "the bullies" will be trying to shame? Prepare him for the possiblity that he will be laughed at, A LOT! and his masculinity will be brought into question even by some of the girls that he will eventually be trying to impress with that same masculinity.
