my son is twelve years old. my friend told me that before she started cutting herself she would cut up other things. my son has a lot of stuff going on and that is what he will do. make stab marks into the table cloth, carve into the walls with nails etc...has anyone else heard of that being an early warning sign of self mutilation?

there is a lot of stuff going on with him. any major change and he falls apart and him starting middle school triggered it. he is getting into fights at school and him carving into walls and stabbing my table cloth is something to worry about. I am not worried about nothing.

No. I never heard of way to predict self mutilation before it happens. Somebody could be destructive to objects and never self-mutilate.

If you suspect he may be a cutter he probably is, please check his body.A lot of cutters cut in places where it wont show my older son would cut on hid thighs and stomach, he was a clever one he ripped up an old sheet kept it hidden, so that if he cut to deep he could wrap the cuts so that he didn't bleed on his clothes so that I wouldn't see the blood. One night he just got so carried away because of a breakup with his girlfriend that he could not m\use his homemade bandages, and there was blood every where & he required stitches. He had a short stay in the psychitric tee and chil unit. I then would check him out even though he was 16 years old! I was concerned and was afraid I would have a break down of my own.

As a self mutilator in the past I dont know if I myself put forth any signals. My temper however was worse and I began to withdraw because I was consumed with cutting. I remember when growing up I would throw knives in the wall to see if they would stick but I dont know if that really meant anything it just made my mom mad.

I don't recall doing any kind of behavior like that before I started self-harming. But keep in mind that girls tend to act inwards while boys tend to act outwards. Your son is cutting up other things than himself, this doesn't mean that eventually he will start cutting himself. Just keep talking to him and try to help him through his depressive or angry episodes.

No, I haven't at least but you should keep a close eye on him. Make sure he doesn't do anything to himself.
