Bad shoulders run in my family, but I think this issue also has something to do with my years as a waitress. Holding lots of weight straight up in the air put a lot of strain on my neck and shoulders. Now, every once in a while, I get what I assume is a pinched nerve. It feels like the issue might be in the base of my neck somewhere, but it affects my left shoulder terribly. Once the pain comes, it stays for days at a time. I can't sleep because no matter what position I'm in it seems to put pressure on my shoulder and makes the pain worse. I've been reduced to whining and whimpering to my husband about the pain at 4 in the morning... so sad. IBProufen seems to help a small amount. I've also got some response from ice packs. BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH. I need a miracle. Some sports cream or some herbal rememdy, maybe? I'm getting desperate ) :

The majority of my family suffers with Degenerative Disc Disease in some form or fashion. You should really find a good orthopedic surgeon to determine if you have this. I found relief after my surgeon performed an Anterior Discetomy and fused my C5-6 vertebrae. This might not be the case for you, but it would be worth looking into. The doctor can order x-rays, MRIs, and CT Scans to determine if this is your problem ...

Once my doctor did the surgery, my pain went away. Prior to going to the surgery, some of my pain relief techniques included:
1. I used heating pads and Thermacare Wraps. I liked the Thermacare b/c you could stick in on your skin and they provided up to 12 hours of relief.
2. Aleve - I would take this or Ibuprofen.

Hope this helps and you are feeling better soon.

What you really need is to find a good orthopedic surgeon. Get an MRI and find out what the problem really is. I tried everything for my neck/shoulder pain for years; went to all kinds of doctors, chiropractors; therapy. When I finally found Thomas O'Brien in Nashville, he did the necessary tests and found deteriorating discs in my cervical spine and did a discectomy. I was home the next morning and after two weeks, I felt the relief I'd sought for years. I'd still be whining and whimpering if I hadn't found the best of the best of doctors.

I wish I had this 2 years ago when I damaged my rotator cuff while showing off. This is very detailed and really gives you the techniques you need to sort out your own shoulder issues and a lot more info such as preventing further injuries. If you have a shoulder keeping you awake at night you'll know it's no laughing matter.

Stop Shoulder Pain Permanently?

If there's no surgery to fix this problem, drug therapy is the only answer.
I had chronic nerve pain of the optic nerve. (I still do.) I went around the country, and I saw every kind of doctor you can think of. Finally, $100,000 later, (I had no insurance, and that wiped us out) A neuro-opthalmologist told me that drug therapy was my only hope. So I was put on Morphene Sulphate and Codeine. It really helps me. I can laugh now!

I believe no one should have to live in pain. If there's no possible surgery, I knew that I would rather live 30 more years happy, than 50 more years in the bed in the dark crying.
So if you really mean "Enough is enough," it's time for you to get on drug therapy.
Btw, it's 25 years later, and these meds are not killing me. :)

From your outline, you indicate two things. There seems to be a familial tendency to postural problems. You have found an occupation that is an aggravational factor for this condition. It would be interesting to find out what you and your family have done in the past, to get rid of this problem.

Would suggest it is about time or even past time to have consulted a doctor of Chiropractic. This familial tendency could be as simple as having one leg shorter than the other. The body has to make many adaptations to keep the head above the feet and since you all seem to have similar problems, is highly suggestive this is the real problem. This would reveal a considerable postural discrepancy. One shoulder higher than the other, the same problem with th level of the hips.

Have you tried going to a good doctor? I would suggest a neurologist or even an orthopedic doctor.
