The role of pains and sufferings in spiritual progress is the
same as gold going through purificatory process to achieve
that brilliance. In fact every human being from birth till death
goes on experiencing pain. There is old hindi song, DARD
SEKE JANAM LETHA HAR KOI INSAAN. This planet
earth is reformatory school to achieve that brilliance for which
even god's envy the human birth because for them there is
no moksha - heaven yes but moksha no. So from prophet to
an ordinary human all have to go through pain and sufferings
ultimately to pave way towards liberation. Cheers!

Pain and sufferings are supposed to make one humble but it all depends upon the bringing up of the person. If a person is brought with fine values and value for self-respect then that person will turn adversity into an opportunity but many resort to drinking, theft and such activities to drown their sorrow. If one is able to connect the pain and suffering as God's test then definitely they will lead to spiritual progress.

Anybody and everybody in this world will have sufferings physical and mental. That does not mean he or she is progressing spiritually. On the other hand the person who either by God's grace or due to his destiny, is progressing spiritually will only have physical sufferings. He will not have any mental suffering. he may loose things around him but will remain unruffled.

Asking that question should be the start of answering it for Yourself. My answer to this has evolved.
For now i say that pain/suffering is like the cup, and the more You suffer, the deeper the cup becomes. And wine is the joy that fills the cup, at which point You can be glad for the depth You achieved through the difficulties in life.
(James, i'm sure You meant "patience" -- only doctors need "patients.")

Until one has pain or sufferring, mostly doesnot bother about spirituality. 40+ peorsons, as they pass through stress due to pains/sufferings of profession and personal responsibilities; related stresses become motivators for diverting one towards meditations and other spiritual processes.
BUT recently in Art Of Living workshops & Satsangs, I can see a good number of youngsters also getting involved, thats a really good sign.

In the walk of spiritual life pain and sufferings should have same placement with happiness and enjoyment .
EQUANIMITY
But then in practical terms humans tend to acclaim credit for all the happiness and enjoyment to oneself and blame others for sufferings and pain
Then again humans tend to reserve happiness and enjoyment to oneself but when its pain after blaming he searches a way to survive and escape from that state
In this direction he turns to all forces known and unknown including GOD
But when he turns to god its likely that he get more involved in that relation , and get devoted too
Then in the next stage he begins to realise that he has some divine blessings within him from his gods
This COULD ignite in him a deeper devotion trying to see the world as different reflections of his own GOD
Ultimately he realises that he is not different from his gods
So in an indirect fashion pain and sufferings could help one in his spiritual path

How can anyone develope the emphathy and sensitivity to the pain and suffering that others go though, unless they themself can directly relate to it. Also, how can one get the strong motivation to make a difference in this world, unless one can relate to the pain that ther world's problems cause. Character, A very valuable spiritual asset, requires acting well under harsh or painful conditions.

It is futile to think that by giving oneself pain and suffering you can progress spiritually. What is the proof . Or there any instances that one has pro grassed by putting oneself in pain in this modern word.
