I think Islam does NOT oppress women, and Lavender you are so right when it comes to other religions being worse to their women.
Over in the UK and America , among the christians and atheists, many many men beat their wives... but yet they say this is something that the Qur'an permits - when we all know this verse is taken out of context and misinterpreted.
Non - muslim women often feel the need to dress revealingly - thus giving up their modesty and compromising, conforming and being oppressed by what men want.. they think in order to get a man they should dress without modesty. However, a Muslim woman will not rely on her looks or her body for a man to appreciate her. A Muslim man will appreciate a Muslim woman on account of her honest reputation, her modesty and her moral character.
Islam recognised the difference between men and women, and gave women express rights and allowances.

well not in islam when the husband dies she has to stay home for 4 months and 10 days and wait to see if she was pregnant after that she could marry again and start a new life with a new husband and this new husband will take care of her child and if she does not want to get marry again that is up to her no oppression in islam

islam protects the woman give her a great rights & free her from slavey from long time ago & told her u stay at ur house like a queen & the man will do all the work -= imagine all woman stay in their houses ?! there will be no unemployment men in all the world ) but also said she can work if she had to in the rules of covering her hair talking slowly dont look in the mans eyes & cover her hair ) waw thats all good

One sure thing I know about how Islam treats women.There are thousands of women imported from poor countries like Indonesia,China,Sri lanka, India, Pakistan and B'desh to be employed as slaves in countries like Saudi Arabia,Oman,Muskat,Dubai.The employer treats them like literal slaves physically,mentally and sexually abusing them and often they will end up dead mentally if not physically.I wonder how their family system allows such treatment of house maids.Won't their wives,daughters,sisters oppose an unfair treatment to a fellow woman?Most of the times the employer sexually abuse the worker and gets help from their wives for doing so.I worked with a human rights society during which time I came to know about these horrible stories and most of the times the worker never gets to go back to her country as the government also doesn't help to rescue her.No other religion in these days treats women in such inhuman ways and no govt support such activities.This can happen only in the middle east.Now you decide if Islam oppresses women or not.

Even if they don't pracitce it anymore women still have no life in Hinduism when there husband dies. Their life ends then. They can never marry again.
