Invited to a 'Black Tie Optional' event. I don't own a tux and don't plan on renting one. This is an evening ball that is a charity benefit, so it's not work related or a wedding. I don't know anyone there and it's mainly going to be some of the fat cats from the community. I plan on wearing just a plain dark blue business suit. Surprisingly though I don't own a white shirt. Would it be ok to wear a blue shirt with matching tie? I don't know why I'm worrying since we'll only be staying for like an hour anyway and I won't know anyone, but I don't want to stand out. It seems like Black Tie Optional is more or less just telling men to please at least wear a suit and not just khakis and a sportcoat.

If it were a daytime event I'd say you are ok with the blue shirt. Since it's an evening event - and you say you don't want to stand out - go out and get a nice white shirt to wear with the dark blue suit. You'll always find use for the shirt so it's not like you are buying something that you'll never use again.

Too bad you aren't going for the tux. My husband bought his before our wedding - figuring he'd use it at least once a year - and he ends up wearing it at least twice a year. It's great to see him in it - sooo handsome!

Your date (girlfriend/wife?) would love to see you in a tux! She might say that it doesn't matter to her - but believe me - if you go for it, she'll appreciate it and you'll look great in it. Every man looks more handsome in a tux!

Whatever you decide - have a great time!

Black tie optional does not mean just don't wear khakis. It means it's a dressy affair period. You should rent a tux but if you don't then at least buy a white shirt and appropriate tie. Since it's a ball, you're date should also be in an appropriate evening gown.

that would want to be ok. It in basic terms relies upon how dressy thte wedding ceremony is, and if the fellow whos wedding ceremony that is might want to care. If its more suitable laid back, then thats ideal. If its no longer, then possibly attempt dressier upload-ons. wish this helps.
