If you are fishing for food, it is justified. However, if you are fishing for fun, then you realise that the fishing hook actually tears the inside of the mouth of the fish. So they probably would not be able to eat for a few days before it heals. It's painful.
I used to do a lot of fishing when I was young. I realise now that I had hurt so many of these hapless creatures!

Well, I always have been of the opinion that you should eat your fish that you catch... why hook the poor buggers if it ain't for sustenance, eh?
Or are you metaphorically fishing for answers?

It seems kind of cruel to me to inflict the pain and not eat them. That's why I don't fish.

Only if your hook has ruptured their stomach or gills or other organ such that the fish would slowly bleed to death upon returning to its environment.

Isn't that just torturing the fish for your own enjoyment? (I'm not saying you get enjoyment from their torture, but that in the process of fishing for your enjoyment, they are getting hooked and injured.)
