Well, as a teacher, I have to tell you I avoid walking past the lunchroom at my school because of the smell of the food. I believe most school lunches are very high in fat, salt, carbs and other undesireables. The law says they have to meet a certain nutritional requirement, so I suppose in theory they are healthy, but then, they are only nutritionally balanced if the kids are eating everything offered to them. Most kids throw away the fruits, veggies or anything else healthy, but they load up on the mac and cheese, pizza, etc. LOL - my students all bring their uneaten (still wrapped in cellophane) salads to our class guinea pigs - there is always WAY too much salad for the guinea pigs to eat!
Personally, I think I would pack a lunch for my child. I honestly think that Peanut Butter and Jelly on whole wheat is healthier than school mac and cheese. If I wanted my child to eat healthy, I wouldn't count on the school to feed completely healthy meals....I'd take that responsibility myself. Besides, most kids say that school lunch passes as food, but it really doesn't taste that good - my students groan in the morning most days when they hear what the school lunch will be...then they chat with each other about how gross that food is...

No matter how "Healthy" schools proclaim their lunches to be, it's usually not that great. Though they may give you the facts, they're usually pretty bad. The reason is is that many schools have to make a lunch for anywhere from 200-800 kids, even at elementary school levels. With this number, they definitely aren't worried about the children's health. We had a group in school trying to change this, but most schools are pretty hard to move on this subject. I'd say that if you're considering getting your kid a school lunch, pack the lunch the night before with your child. That way you just grab it and go, and you're kids getting better tasting and a healthier lunch.

It sounds like you are the one making this into a bullying situation, and that you have no understanding of food allergies. I would have been fine if you said you created a peanut-free table (a normal table in the cafeteria) where the children with allergies could sit as well as any kids who had peanut-free lunches. But no. You said it's a card table behind a curtain. WHY?!?!? Why can't they have a normal table? Why the curtain? This makes it sound like you are punishing the children, and making it obvious that they are different and separate from their classmates. FYI, a curtain will do NOTHING and is ridiculous. It only serves to separate. Your plan is causing the children to be treated differently. You say that you think their allergies are "bullcrap." Why do you think that? Peanut allergies are pretty common and it's people like you who make it unsafe for people with allergies. There were many articles in the news last week about a little girl who died at school due to an allergy. Food allergies can be life threatening, and they need to be taken seriously. Quite honestly, I think YOU need to step out of this and not be the one to be involved in this situation. This should be between the school staff and the families of the children with allergies. YOU have made this situation worse and it really has nothing to do with you. A peanut free table can be safe if done correctly, and can also be done in a way that is supportive of children, if done correctly. It needs to be open to their friends who commit to bringing peanut free lunches, and ALL children should be required to wash their hands correctly after eating. This separation nonsense with a curtain is just cruel. Something also needs to be done about the bullying atmosphere at this school.

My son has been to 6 schools. It's been pretty much fast food that they are serving. So I would have to say the lunches are bad for kids. I would love to see a change. If its the same case where you are, send your kids to school with a lunch from home.

It's actually different everywhere. Some states, and even some individual schools have made it a point to have healthy meal programs providing lunch to the students there, however, many have not. So it would matter on the individual school

Depends on the menu. You should know ahead of time what is being served and decide on a day by day basis. Be sure to find out what "snacks" are offered for an extra charge. They are often junk. If you don't want your child to have them let the school know.

It depends on the school district. Our schools provide a nutritious lunch every day.

Our school lunch is actually very nutritious and I feel my children get a healthier option at school than anything I could pack them.
