I guess they will have some basic sense, but they wont know what could happen. Ill be letting my two 6 month old kittens out for the first time in about two weeks and a little concerned for them, we have some busy roads around us. Also is the butter on the paws just a old wive's tale?

They feel the vibrations way before WE see the cars. Hear them to. But try and shooo them away. If you enforce some guidelines they have a better chance. Because as kittens they play and get distracted. Especially two. So release them on your day off and babysit. Just allow them to experiment. and make it gradual. I did anyway. I had a blind one that scooted across a busy road no matter what I did. The big smart one too. Just be there in the beginning.

NO idea about butter except for fur balls. Good luck !!

PS Whiskas has great little foil packs of tuna treats/crunchies. Buy some and reward good behavior and coming inside!

Don't trust a cat, much less a young kitten, to know about cars, it only takes once to make a mistake that's fatal.

Unless they're on a harness, or you're right there with them, don't trust them to do the common sense human thing and stay off the road or away from vehicles. They just don't understand about that.

Butter is an old wives tale, the only thing it does is give them a bit of fatty food to eat. It does nothing about keeping them on the home turf or staying quiet in a storm.

They don't! Do NOT let your cat out. Cats that are kept indoors all the time live MUCH longer than outdoor cats. Here is a far from exhaustive list of reasons to keep your cat indoors, all the time, or outside only in enclosures.

1. Injury or death by vehicles
2. Poisoned intentionally or accidentally
3. Injury or death by fighting with other cats
4. Infectious diseases contracted from other cats: FIP,FIV,FeLV,URIs
5. Parasites: fleas, ticks, ringworm
6. Injury or death by sadists
7. Injury or death by dogs or predators
8. Killing of wildlife by outdoor cats
9. Getting lost, picked up by A/C
10. Theft for sale as laboratory animals or "bait" for illicit gaming
11. Problems with neighbors: cats littering their yards

Okay, you touched a nerve, I had a very dear cat of mine hit who I let out occasionaly let out hit. As another one a few years back.
I NEVER let my cats near the road, if they do go outside I supervise them until they have eaten their grass or sniffed around, and got their sun.
They say the roaming distance for a cat is over a mile in radius. If they want to get somewhere, they are going to do it.
If you don't want your kittens hit, make them indoor cats.

Cats are perfectly satisfied w/looking out a window and getting smells from an open screened window.

most places now wont let u have a cat thats an outdoor. Its very dangerous to have outdoor cats.

People that have outdoor cats dont really want whats best for their animal. Do u notice how many you see on theside of the road??? Do u want that to happen to you???

That's crazy!!!
They don't know to stay out of the street - they can get killed!

DON'T LET YOUR CATS OUTSIDE!!!!!!!!
IT'S DANGEROUS, they will be exposed to disease, hit by a car, killed by other animals, etc. !

Be a responsible pet owner and keep your pet safe and keep them inside.

Travisje - you should not own cats!!! ~period~

cats were not used to live outside are very easy to be hit by car, because they are not used to scare people and noises so take care, your cat might be hit very soon.

Please, please don't leave your kittens outside unattended!! Cats are very curious, especially kittens, and regardless of how cautious you may train them to be, they can easily get themselves into trouble which will lead them to getting lost, getting hurt, or even getting killed. If you want your cats to be outdoors, please buy them a leash and secure it to something so they can't go too far.

I live near a busy road and all my 4 cats are outside and no matter what I do they go near the road cos they are just oo darn curious.I care for my cats and resent that remark. Its not practical for our cats to live inside and I have had many knocked down and I always bury them and never just leave them there.I care for my cats
