So I have to get a crown... My very back top tooth. I am so nervous about it. I have been told not to worry... But, i am... Doesn't it hurt more than a filling? Does it ache... What should I expect? I have a great dentist... And I love his assistant... They are very gentle, and care about how I am feeling... The novacaine shots, they are tolerable... I just want to know how bad this is... He said there is a slight chance it MAY need a root canal but he won't know until he gets in there.

First of all, to the person who said "if he is going to put a crown on, he has to do a root canal" - THAT IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY FALSE! The 2 are 2 separate procedures. A root canal treated tooth does NOT always need a crown, and a crowned tooth does NOT always need a root canal. Look, you need a root canal when the decay reaches the nerve. A crown is needed to help stabilize a tooth - whether it's because the tooth is cracked, or if a large filling is currently present, or a large area of decay is present encompassing most of the surfaces of the tooth.
A crown IS NOT painful if you are well anesthetized. If you don't have pain when you get a filling done in that dental office, you won't feel pain when the crown is done. You will get the same amount of anesthesia for both procedures.

Depends on how frozen your mouth is when they do this if it is completely frozen it shouldn't hurt at all.... if the freezing didn't go through completely it all depends on how sensitive your teeth are have you ever got tooth aches from eating something sweet like chocolate or cold like ice cream if so those are your nerve endings not being protected as well cause you have weak enamel and it will probably hurt you more to get a filling

no it doesn't. i guess the worst part of it is when the dentist takes a string and shoves it down around the circumference of the tooth, in order to separate the gum away so that the crown can be fitted down below the gumline. but you will be majorly numbed up and won't feel a thing. afterwards maybe, but not bad.

The crown isn't so bad...compared to a filling. I HATE dental work...and actually, the crown wasn't the bad part. The ROOT CANAL...that's BAD....I need strong meds to get any dental work done...I'll take a crown over most dental work.

The actual crown fitting doesn't hurt. More than likely you will need a root canal. This hurts much more than the fitting of the crown. Good luck

As long as the novacaine is working you should not feel anything during the procedure. You may experience small pain once the drugs have worn off. If you need a root canal you will have pain after the drugs have worn off. Good Luck
