can aspartame cause cancer?

Many reports but still little answers right? If you are chugging pop all the time & have a weight issue, getting diet pop with aspartame is better for you than the extra weight & health issues that go with it. If you are diabetic than aspartame is better than indulging in sweets that you know will cause health problems. The key to anything is moderation. Everyone dies from something. Everything you do or don't do has a risk to it. You could die from the flu or get hit by a bus. I see people quit smoking & then have health issues form stress & being overweight! They did 1 good thing & now have 2 to fix! Just moderate & enjoy life. Web MD is a great resource. Wikipedia might have great info too. I use aspartame & lost the fat weight & kept it off. Before that I drove myself nuts trying to lose it. Be happy & you will be healthier!

There have been numerous legitimate independent scientific studies done on aspartame and no evidence has been found linking it to cancer or any other major health problem other than those who may be allergic to it.

Sugar, on the other hand, has been linked as a direct cause of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

The major fear people have (coming from bogus chain letters and reports, btw) is of methanol. As mentioned above, methanol can be converted by the body into fermaldehyde. However, it's in such small amounts as to not be a concern at all. Most people don't realize that other food and drink items such as tomato juice and most citrus juices, like orange and grapefruit juice, contain much higher concentrations of methanol, up to 10x as much, and people have been consuming them for much longer. The body is remarkably adapted to filtering out trace toxins that may be formed. To reaffirm the above poster, methanol has to reach a certain temperature to turn into formaldehyde so it's truly of little concern.

Aspartame was approved by the FDA back in the 70s and has been extensively tested since then. The bad reports come from pseudo-scientific selective reporting fear mongers really, who have no real understanding of human physiology and nutrition.

No. The biggest fear is that aspartame can turn into fermaldehyde which is dangerous for your body. If you take into account how much aspartame there is inside a 2L bottle of coke, you would have to drink like 1000 bottles in order to have enough aspartame to actually have any affects to your body. Not only that, but aspartame turns into fermaldehyde at almost 90 degrees Celsius. Your body will NEVER get that hot, so there's no reason to worry about it.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used to make Nutrasweet / Equal and sometimes labeled as phenylalanine in products, has been the subject of heated controversy—both because of safety issues and the shady circumstances surrounding its approval. Considering possible connections between aspartame and diseases such as brain tumors, brain lesions and lymphoma, and taking into account alleged conflicts of interest during the approval process, you owe it to yourself to learn the facts—not just what the lobbyists and manufacturer want you to know. Aspartame Quick Facts * Aspartame is NOT a natural substance! * Aspartame was originally BANNED by the FDA * Aspartame is NOT a diet product. * Aspartame is NOT safe. * Aspartame is NOT a food additive * Aspartame is an UNREGULATED and UNSAFE CHEMICAL COMPOUND. * In liquids aspartame BREAKS DOWN to FORMALDEHYDE: * Aspartame is even worse for diabetics! * Aspartame poisoning is cumulative

There is no evidence that aspartame (or any other artificial sweetener) is harmful. A study on sacharrin back in the 1970's appears to be the source for the confusion. However, even that test appears to have misintrepreted the data. For more information, don't take my word, check out the link below.

It can cause head aches and some people are allergic to it.

Aspartame causes bladder cancer in lab rats when a large amount are given.

There are recommended limits, though. I think 8-12 twelve ounce sodas in one day meets that limit.

Too much of anything is bad.

the link to brain cancer was debunked last year, however, we still dont know the long-term deleterious effects of aspartame. one diet soda a day should not be a problem. but remember, soda is highly acidic and will wear away your teeth enamel. furthermore, artificial sweetners can have an unwanted effect of making you eat more calories.
