There is no "Catholic bible", or "Protestant bible". There is only "the bible". The only Christian religions that actually have a different bible from the others are BOTH Protestant. They are Mormon and JW's.

Don't believe me? Go read them all.

i realize it, i am nost sure everyone else does. many people chose a religion because they agree with the general ideas of it and feel like they are more comfortable in that faith. which isnt a bad way to go about it, and while they do study their religion, most do not take the time to study every detail of their own religion which sounds kind of outragous but its very normal. if you study in detail all of the religions they are pretty similar, i am not saying that there arent big obvious differences, but that there are some general similarities.

True, there should only be one Bible. There should not be a “Catholic Bible” or a “Protestant Bible”. There should not even be a bible for Mormons and a bible for JWs. There should be an official reference Bible for all Christians.

The Bible consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Jews call the Old Testament “Tanakh” from the initial letters of Hebrew. Torah Neviim Ketuvim for “Pentateuch, Prophets, Hagiographa”. Some Christians have added a number of other Jewish writings made during the Second Temple period called Apocrypha. The New Testament consists purely Christian writings about Jesus Christ.

Why do we have many versions of the same Bible? Some have translated it to suit the teachings of their particular churches, e.g. JW’s “New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures”. Although many homes have the King James Version, why did publishing companies come up with different versions? Is there truth in their claim that they are using additional manuscripts and more modern, easy-to-understand language? Or is it to be able to sell more Bibles to make more money? Is it about this copyright stuff?

The Holy Spirit we talk to recommended that we use the King James Version because He said that it is nearer the truth. I believe in His recommendation because King James during his time got the best scholars to translate the Bible that took them about ten years to complete. Did you know who can tell us the truth? John 16:13 states: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” The Spirit of truth is another name for the Holy Spirit. We, Christians, should therefore use the King James Version as our official reference Bible even though it is not the whole truth but at least, it is nearer the truth. It is the Holy Spirit who can tell us what really is the truth.

Actually, the 'Catholic Bible' has some books in it that are not found in the 'Protestant Bible'. But otherwise, yes, there are just many different translations of the book.

Addendum to the Mormon guy - yes, the Mormons teach that both books are from God. The problem is they are not. The bible is sufficient unto itself, and so is God. The book of mormon is nothing less than heresy. You are leading people away from God.

Addendum to the Questioner - Mormons and JWs are NOT Christians. They are both cults that teach that you can and must work your way into heaven. The bible teaches that this is impossible, which is why the Gift (of Christ's sacrifice) was given. All you have to do is accept the Gift.

If I have offended you, or any other reader, good. I hope it makes you think and study more.

Actually, there are differences between Bibles used in Catholic and Protestant Churches. Protestants favor translations based on the King James Version, which was completed in 1611. King James removed the Deuterocanonical books from the Old Testament, while Catholic translations have preserved those writings as part of Sacred Scripture.

Mormons believe and use the King James version of the Bible. In fact in Sunday School right now we are studying the New Testament. We are literally going straight out of the Bible, reading the chapters and studying the New Testament. We do believe in the Bible for the millionth time.

We believe that the Book of Mormon is an additional body of scripture and another testament of Jesus Christ. It is the words of the prophets in the americas. The Bible is the prophets of the mostly the middle eastern section of the world.

They compliment each other and neither is more important or more true then the other. Just diff prophets of diff sections of the world.

Just because you say that is the way it is doesnt mean it is the way it is. I really really dont understand why christians have such a hard time believing that God just might have had other prophets in other parts of the world. You may not believe the Book of Mormon is the word of God but you dont have any more authority to claim it isnt then I have to claim it is and because you say it isnt doesnt exactly prove your point. What is more logically sound, God only gave direction and his word to a very very small section of the world and that this one little book, the Bible, is all God ever has or ever will give his people and that if you dont believe it exactly like you claim he will send you to a fiery hell forever, or
God had prophets and apostles all over the world preaching his word and that since he has always used prophets and apostles in the history of his church and the world that he is continuing the same pattern today and that he wouldnt just throw us on this earth with just a book to know the truth. There were more people on this planet then just those in the middle east. Did God abandon the rest of the world?

Actually, the Catholic Bible contains the Apocrypha, 5 approved books which were removed by Protestants in the 16th century.

So there is a difference. And some translations are more accurate than others because different translators had access to different biblical texts (some have since been destroyed or lost).

AND the Jehovah's Witnesses are not Christian. They do not teach a crucial Christian biblical doctrine - the Holy Trinity. Nor do they believe Jesus is God. These are Christian dogmans - how can you not believe them and still be a Christan?

AND the Jehovah's Witnesses use a translation they manufactured in the 1950's which changes many key words in scripture to support their beliefs.

Yes and no.

Yes, the Bible is the word of God, and there is only one Bible, just as there is only one God.

However, there are different versions or interpretations of the Bible. For instance, the Bible the Protestants read does not include several of the chapters in the Bible that Catholics read. The Jewish Bible consists of most of the books in the Old Testament, but nothing from the New Testament.

However, they are all the Word of God. It's just that some Bibles include more chapters than others. Also, let us not forget that the Bible is not the ONLY word of God. God speaks to us even today (though not in actual words, but in thoughts).

Yep, I believe you. The Bible also warns us of "another gospel" which the Mormons offer, which is false doctrine. The JWs have the same Bible, but have altered it to go with their own false teachings.

As to the Bible being "interpretted[sic] in different was," you're incorrect. There is only one way to interpret God's Word because it all points to Jesus.

God bless!

I've always said that the Bible is only as good as your interpretation of it. Far too many "Christians" believe that their interpretation (which isn't actually theirs, it's Pat Robertson's or Tim LaHaye's or someone elses) is the only interpretation.

They seem to have forgotten that the Pharisees, who studied the scripture diligently, totally misinterpreted it, and got called on the carpet by Jesus. The fact that someone has studied the Bible for 50 years doesn't make that person's interpretation correct.

Tolerance, as taught by Jesus, is the primary lesson that today's fundamentalist / dispensationalist Christians have failed to learn.

You have not correctly understood Mormon Christianity. Mormons consider both the Book of Mormon and the Bible to be the word of God. We use both books.

M. Russell Ballard, one of the head leaders of the LDS Church, recently said: "My brothers and sisters, the Holy Bible is a miracle! It is a miracle that the Bible’s 4,000 years of sacred and secular history were recorded and preserved by the prophets, apostles, and inspired churchmen. It is a miracle that we have the Bible’s powerful doctrine, principles, poetry, and stories. But most of all, it is a wonderful miracle that we have the account of the life, ministry, and words of Jesus, which was protected through the Dark Ages and through the conflicts of countless generations so that we may have it today. It is a miracle that the Bible literally contains within its pages the converting, healing Spirit of Christ, which has turned men’s hearts for centuries, leading them to pray, to choose right paths, and to search to find their Savior."
