I was thinking of hiring a coach and selling tickets for a trip to Alton Towers is it ok to do this or do I need to be a tour operator will the company I hire from be responsable for all insurances and so on

You can not sell tickets for a coach trip with out the appropriate licences. It is highly unlikely that the coach company will have ones that will cover you.

Yes you can. It happens all the time.

The coach operator will have arranged at least the legal minimum insurance requirements.

Discuss with them what they have and if you feel it necessary you could arrange more yourself. I doubt you will need it.
