yes, a bra is a bra, no matter the type. It is inappropriate to be seen in any type of bra without a shirt, just as it should be.

Some sports bras look exactly like a sporty top so those wouldn't be inappropriate to be seen in. If it obviously looks like a bra then you need to keep your shirt on.

Probably about the same level of inappropriateness - although sports bras look a lot like the same style sports tops, so it's likely that very few would notice.
Honestly though there are more revealing swim tops that many bras, so it is a rather artificial standard.

Coming from a man's point of view, it depends on the type of bra. Most are meant to be worn under clothes however, there are some designed to be worn outside too. I've seen them worn by women at the gym where I work-out. It's not distracting and looks decent enough. It also depends on your own level of comfort.

Um, I work out in a sports bra (from lulu lemon) all the time. Our dance team HAS to wear them to all practices, with nothing overtop. So no i don't think it's inappropriate depending on where you are. I mean if you are just walking around downtown or grocery shopping then yes it's a bit odd, but if you are working out, hanging out at home, at a dance class etc. I don't see the problem.

There are sport bras that are designed to be worn without shirts on top. As a rule of thumb, if it has fastenings at the back and adjustable straps, it counts as underwear and should be worn under something. If it doesn't, it's okay to wear it by itself.

I think it depends on where you are. At work maybe not. In a park on a hot summer day throwing a frisbie fine. Also you might want to think about what kind of attention you will attract and if you want that kind of attention

I do not consider this to be unappropriated. (unless it is visually repulsive ie: the woman is fat, and her 'rolls' are all hanging down.)
My reasoning on this is, all the "parts" are covered. And really, what is the difference if I wore a sports bra or a bikini top. A Bikini top actually reveals more. Additionally, while some argue that it's underwear, so what. Girls wear low-rise pants and display their G-string, and guys wear their pants down low to display their boxers.
