this guy made a lifesize statue of an anatomically correct Jesus in crucifixion pose from chocolate. Some people seem to be upset by this. For some reason, they find this offensive. Sure, I made the "This is my body..." joke, but what's the big deal? Do they make chocolate chill pills, because some folks need to take some.

Eartha Q, are you saying homocidal fanaticism is an understandable, justifiable trait?

Magley64: I live about 45 minutes from the big-butter-Jesus statue. Locals tend to call it "Touchdown Jesus" what with his arms raised like a football (US) ref.

It's just wrong on SOOoo many levels:
1) The musical essence of "My Sweet Lord" was ruled to be a plagiarization of the very secular "He's So Fine"; similarly - and ironically - the story of Jesus was a re-spin of the earlier tales of other dying & resurrecting messiah-gods. We should not be reminded of this fact.
2) The caffeine in the chocolate is an addictive, mood-altering drug. Such gateway substances have been known to lead to dancing.
3) The sugar content would not only give a buzz but would contribute to the partaker's ongoing gluttony.
4) There will be an outburst of greed when the bidding opens for the statue's naughty bits.
5) Chocolate can be said to symbolize the savage conquest and oppression of cocoa-producing regions by imperialist European nations. Again, don't remind us of the past.
And, possibly the most troubling aspect:
6) It visually implies that Jesus was black. We've all seen the paintings, and we *know* that he was perfectly Aryan.

I thought "My Sweet Lord" was a good statement about the commercialization of Easter, even if that wasn't what was intended.
I remember I got a chocolate cross one year and I was like "What the hell? Let me see if I can really taste the agony?"
But you're right, people do need to lighten up about it, a lot of people I know got really upset by it.
In any event, I bet it's delicious.

Unless it had a 'Jesus' label on the chocolate item I don't know how anyone would recognize it as Jesus. Nobody was taking pictures or drawing his likeness in ways that survived the times.

I find it to be no more offensive than the depictions of some poor bastard on a cross, bleeding from hands, feet, and head, that people put up all over around Christmas time.

I can understand why some may take offence but...
given that the man was a Christian artist and the reason behind this portrayal being the title " my sweet lord "
I do not think it was done in bad taste ( no pun intended )

There's nothing offensive about a chocolate Jesus. In fact, it makes Him more appealing.

I agree. WTF?
My mother in law brought me back a lollipop from the Vatican with the Pope's face on it and it was hysterical. They have no problem expoiting him for money. Maybe they couldn't sell the chocolate jesus and that was the problem.

Because people always need to have a reason to be offended, and no one has a sense of humor anymore.

well, i think originally, it was hung in a public window or something. i would have an issue with that. people shouldn't have to see nudity if they don't want to.
but if it's something private where you expect to see it, then what's the big deal? i saw a pic in the paper of it, it was "tastefully" done : )
