im not being mean writing additional comments on this i just wanted to explain, it bothered me that the mom embarrased the little girl like that, they looked like really poor people, the mom seen people around and used it as a way to announce that her daughter got her period, you could tell they didnt know any better, I just hated to see that i wish i had rolled the window up but i was so surprised to see someone act like that i didnt know how to react, you could easily tell the mom just wanted to put on a show at her daughters expence.

Some parents think embarrasing their kids is funny. I dont see the humor in it. I know if I was that poor kid, I wouldnt want anyone to know I was on my period. Im 25 and still dont want people to know. What a horrible mother!

If the little girl looked really embarrassed thats very sad, im not sure what I would have done but some families are just loud and like that! Ive got a very close knit friends of the family (really they are like my family though) very italian and loud! anyway, whenever a daughter got their period (even me and my sister as well) they made a big deal out of it. It was a little embarrassing but none of us girls really cared, it was expected to say the least.

Two wrongs dont make a right, so if you went over and said sharply at her "Whats the matter with you, keep your voice down, dont you see your poor child is embarrassed ?" the resulting furor would have been harder for the child to take.

Class. Etiquette. Knowing when to whisper and knowing when to shut up. Those can be awfully hard to instill in people. Maybe no one told her when she was a child.

Some mothers are so ridiculous! They are at a place in their life, where nothing embarrasses them anymore, but they forget how it might seem to their child. When you are that age (and I know, because my daughter is in 5th grade) everything embarrasses them. If I say "hello" to them in front of their friends, they get red. I wouldn't have said anything to the mother because it would have just humiliated the child more, but I think the word should be spread to parents that they need to be more sensitive to their child's feelings. I mean, good grief, we all know better!!

Patches gave the best response; the only thing I can add is don't judge so harshly, as you said, they are poor and the woman obviously doesn't know any better. Shaking your head was rude and if you had responded the way Patches described (I know it's too late for that now, but for future reference) how much better would it have been for all concerned.

You could have gotten out of your car and congratulated the little girl since the mom seems to think it is a big idea. Then said loud enough for the mom to hear. Welcome to the club, and something like it's a big secret, and put your finger over your lips like we've got to keep this hush, hush. with a wink and a smile.

parents aren't perfect, they all make mistakes, she probably didn't know exactly how to handle the situation at hand, and was trying to make her daughter feel as comfortable as possible. i'm sure there were better ways to handle it, but sometimes we ,as parents, do stupid things, i can't tell you how many times i was embarrassed with my mom...thats what parents do, they mean well, and only want the best for you, but they sometimes embarrass us, the girl will getover it, take it easy on little mistakes like that, because you never know when you might make one of your children embarrassed. and you wouldn't want anyone commenting on all your little mistakes either. there are a lot worse things that she could be doing...at least the girl gets a cake, that should make up for the embarrassment.

I wouldn't have said anything, I'd just roll up my window and feel sorry for the poor girl.
