I used to teach Sunday School.
But then I felt bad because I didn't really believe the stuff I was teaching the kids. But get this...
One time, I was having class with my kids and we heard the teacher in the next room telling his 6th grade Sunday school class that they were "a bunch of a.s.s.holes."
Seriously! My class and I were both aghast and trying not to laugh. I couldn't believe this elder would say that to a bunch of kids! I mean, it was funny just for the incongruity of having a Sunday school teacher say that to the kids, but really how completely inappropriate.
My kids, though they were subjected to a heathen in Sunday school, were never called a.s.s.holes and were treated with respect. Which group is more likely to become "feral"?

Peroxide, I agree. I was trying because I wanted to make my family happy and I was at the time in love with a minister, but you are right and that's why I stopped doing the church thing. I was in denial.

William, I wish I was just being a troll on this one. This teacher was the father of some girls I later became friends with. I later learned that he was an alcoholic and that he was kind of an ****** at home, too. I'm sorry you don't believe me, but it's the internet and I can understand why you might not!

For those of you who said I should have spoken to the person... I agree. In my defense, I was a 22-year old and this man was in his late 40s and I was, quite honestly, intimidated by him.

Okay... I used to teach that age group. And yes, they can be willfull, inconsiderate, and make bad decisions. They also can be some fantastic young people, too.
If I had heard that, I would have had to excuse myself from the class and ask to speak to this person outside, and somewhere safe, away from the kids. I would try to get the pastor or someone from the Administrative Council to come with me. I would be hard pressed to contain my fury.
It is within the legal rights of any church in US to ask anyone who disrupts worship, to leave the premises of the church. If they refuse, police could be called to take care of removing this person.
Besides this, the United Methodist Church enforces its child protection policies by offering compulsory child protection training to all its Sunday School teachers. Also, there must always be TWO teachers in every class. Preferably one man and one woman and that they are not related.
There are specific checks and balances against this kind of occurrence in my church. Elder or not, this person would no longer be allowed to teach. This person could still attend, of course, providing they behaved appropriately.
All this to make my point that I find that occurrence disgusting and completely unworthy of a Christian.
with regards and respects

Everybody adults and children alike FNORD are a**holes sometimes. IMVHO the truth is better than padded lies. You can't solve a problem until you admit there is one. Sure brainwashed kids are more useful to maintaining the status quo but only people who learn early and often to fnord confront their mistakes will ever initiate change and progress!
Imposition of order = escalation of disorder

Those are NOT feral kids. A feral child is one who is isolated from humans, and sometimes aided by animals.
I am not shocked that an adult teacher would do something stupid in the course of their vocation. Adults do MANY stupid things to children, who then grow up and become stupid adults who do many stupid things to children who then grow......
Well, you can see where this is going.

No one under any circumstances should call kids a**holes. You should have reported this person to the church board and they should not be teaching Sunday School anymore. What a shame but typical for holier than thou types.

intersting story. in answer to your question, i don't think there's any way to predict. when i was a sophomore in high school my sunday school instructor put away the bible and had us read Goethe's Faust. some would say that that would make me feral, but if anything it helped me to realize that you can find God in more places than the Judeo-Christian Bible.

That is unfortunate.
But, even when we go to church, we are not surrounded by perfection.
No one knows the struggles of that man or why he called his class *******.
But, God knows because He knows the hearts of men.

I don't think a sunday school teacher calling the kids ******* will have an effect on them at all. It's probably not nearly as bad as what they're being called by their parents at home.
