I would say the Leupold Gold Ring 8X32mm HD. These are awesome for observation. Leupold's are so friggin clear that it is not even funny.

10 X 50 is a good basic power for a decent set of hunting Binoculars. Wide field of vision,Objective lens is large enough to gather light under low light conditions (As darkness sets in, overcast days..etc)

Just remember as a rule of thumb, when it comes to optic's for Hunting, you are going to get exactly what you pay for. The current market is absolutely flooded with cheap,Russian and Chinese "Junk" that looks like a great deal but the are trash (Avoid Barska Optics).....I'm not saying you should have to pay a fortune on brands like Zeiss or Lica, but at least stick with a well known brands like Bushnell,Nikon,Canon, Pentax or Alpen. Whatever you do physically go to local stores like Cabelas,***** Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops,Sports Authority, and actually look at the different brands and styles with your own hands.NEVER buy optics unseen on the Internet.......A decent pair of hunting Binoculars will run between $120-$150, and these are quality that will last a lifetime if they aren't abused and thrown around. I sell Nikon and Alpen probably 3-1 over the other brands in my store, and I've never gotten a complaint or sold a bad pair that needed replacement in the last 28+ years of business. Take your time and shop. You'll come out ahead in the long run, and the man in your life will be touched and impressed!Good Luck

I recently gave my brother one. Pentax DCF HR II, 8x42 roof prism. I had it (test flight, you know) for a couple weeks. Liked it so much I got another for me, but 10x42. I didn't get it on a whim, I did a bit of research first. I paid $300 each, but then saw others on ebay for half that. I don't think I paid too much.
