At Penn Station take LIRR to Mineola. From there take either N22 or N24 to the mall (about a 10 minute ride). Make sure to take the Hicksville bound N22, not the Jamaica bound N22.

At 42nd St., you'll want to get down to 33nd St. between 7th and 8th Av. - that's Penn Station, it's a short walk to get there, and you can get the Long Island Rail Road from there.
The Carle Place LIRR station is the closest station to the mall, and roughly half a mile away from it. If you choose to take a bus from there, go ahead and take the N22, though it is somewhat unreliable. You'll probably get there before you see a bus.
When you get to the Carle Place station from the city, just walk to the back of the train, and you'll be at Cherry Lane. Walk up Cherry Lane (without crossing the tracks, because that's the wrong way) to Old Country Road and make a right. After you cross over the Meadowbrook Parkway, the mall will be on your left. Definitely can't miss it.
Any other questions, ask away!

after you get off the bus at port authority at 42nd st and 8th ave, you can take the a, c, e, 1, 2, 3 train downtown to 34th street and penn station. At penn station, take the lirr to hempstead (its the last stop on the hempstead line). at the hempstead train station, cross the street to the bus station and catch the n24 bus to roosevelt field mall.

There is no Roosevelt Station on the LIRR.
You need to get to Penn Station. Take the LIRR to Carle Place. From there you can walk, take the bus (down Old Country Rd) or cab it.

To be completely honest, you're better off just going into the city. I don't think there is one store in Roosevelt Field that you wouldn't be able to find in Manhattan (and if not one, but several) It would be so much less effort to just pick out the stores you're interested in and find their NYC addresses and plan accordingly. Roosevelt Field isn't that fantastic.
