There are several definitions. The most simple being caring about someones well being but there is more.

The love for your child goes beyond just caring for them.

You can love someone and hate them at the same time. Like my soon to be ex husband. Love doesn't just go away because he cheated on me.

The love for a friend. When they are at their worst and you just want to punch them in the face for the things they are saying and doing, you still care enough to be there when they fall.

Romantic love. When 2 people get together and become one for a few seconds. Much different from sex.

The fluttering in your stomach when you think about him and the stars in your eyes when his name gets brought up.

In the book of 1 John, John wrote that God IS love. Not that God loves, or God really likes it when we love, but God IS love. Who God is, is love. Actually study 1 Corinthians 13, and this is the character of God and the character that we that claim to walk with God should strive to possess. John even when onto say that if you don't walk in love, you don't walk with God. Love is unconditional and unfailing, and is meant for those that do deserve it from us and those that don't. Look at God and you will see what love truly is.

Love is not only kind, unconditional, giving, caring, but can be full of grief. You can love a person that is destructive to them self, and watching them hurt them self wondering what more can I do to help without interfering or seeming overbearing can cause confusion.

Love is a verb, the feeling is useless unless it is expressed through action. It should never be jealous, oppressive, possessive or obsessive. I believe 1 Cor 13 got it right.
