THE Federal Government believes wearing Islamic scarves should be banned at Australian airports, senior government sources have revealed.

Under the radical security proposal, even the most inoffensive Muslim scarf, the hijab, which covers a woman's hair and neck, would be banned, along with several other types.

Security officials are especially concerned by two other very concealing types of scarf, the niqab and the burka.

Former British cabinet minister Jack Straw sparked controversy some time ago when he said it was best that Muslim women did not cover their faces when they met him.

And France banned Islamic headscarves at schools in 2004, a move that also deeply offended Muslims.

The scarf policy is under active consideration in Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews' office, which is consulting with airport security officials over the policy.

It comes after the Government moved to restrict immigration from Sudan.

Wow, there a lot of hateful people posting. May Allah (God - for those that aren't familiar with Arabic) have mercy on us all. I bet they wouldn't say the same thing if wearing Swastikas were banned.

I think the policy is foolish. WILL NUNS BE SEARCHED AND PROHIBITED TOO? WHAT ABOUT DOO-RAGS? THOSE IN CANCER TREATMENT? SIEKH? Will White,Christain males be prohibited from entering Federal Buildings next? Oh, no.. they're o.k. because they look like "us". Give me a break....

If we are free, then we are to be free from being told what to wear. We're free from having our bodies used as "props" for selling things. And if I want to cover my head, so what? What's it to you? It's MY RIGHT! Just like it's your right to try and wear clothes that look painted on or go out half-naked. How does a scarf equal terrorism? Or maybe you're being forced by society to "look" a certain way, and mad that we don't fall for that foolishness? If God gives us the freedom to choose to cover, not cover, have purple hair, earrings, etc. who is another human to try and force one way of dress?

None of the hijackers wore scarfs! Duh! Screen everyone the same. While you're searching a burqa, "Plain Jane" would be the real suspect. Really, if someone wanted to cause harm - I don't think they'd wear the Most Obvious clothing and get caught!

It's just another ridiculous form of discrimination, and propoganda. I bet the folks that started this have never even spoken to a Muslim. They're just boobs - people who watch too much t.v... Get out and meet a REAL muslim instead of making assumptions.

Lovely how God allows those being displaced by war to immigrate to our own countries! Masha Allah! We bring those we fear right next door - and find out they're just human beings!

Isn't that the same as forcing women to wear the scarf! Non Muslim that is.
I have no problem covering the hair, but the face! that is too much and it is not even Islamic.

A woman was taken out of a bus in Sudan, and was beaten for not wearing the scarf properly. Her hair was showing a little. Now that will concern me more.

With the niqab. How would the official know who is under there. man! women! or if that person is running away from the law! It happens. In the UK for one.

May I ask you. M. Jackson was caught in Dubai coming out of the ladies bathroom wearing the burqa. If you were in the bathroom wouldn't you feel violated by a man being in the ladies bathroom, especially in a Muslim country were even prayer is separated men from women!

I don't know the reason for why Australia is doing that. There must be a reason for it, and it is not against your religion. It could be just for security reason. That is all.

Of course not. We have freedom of religion in the USA. However, the issue did come up when a muslim woman wanted to wear the head wear for her drivers license photo. That can't be tolerated, for obvious reasons. The muslims we must fear are the ones seemingly integrated into our society. For instance, Muhammad Atta hanging out in a strip club the night before 9/11.

It is no worse than America did to Japanese in WW2, Japanese were interned 'for security reasons' I don't agree with interning or banning Muslims but all must be under scrutiny unfortunately the innocent ones as well.

If Muslim were really for peace and against terrorism their religious leaders would realize the need and rational behind this and would open a dialog to work a reasonable and acceptable compromise.

Good point, if you visit an Islamic country, women not of that religion are required by law to adopt the dress and can not drive. A friend of mine was basically covered but her sleeves were too short so the officials spray painted the exposed flesh on her wrists.

How is this any different?

Edit:
One good solution is to ban any head wear in an airport.

Ask yourself this question?

If your where nuns would they have to remove there headscarf?

Mary covered her hair. Nuns cover their hair. I never hear people ask nuns why do you cover your hair or are afraid of them. I understand people Fear what they don't know but come on all you have to do is ask its not that hard.

People say oh Muslims are should be so peaceful. Muslim are people just like everybody else. We have our faults and mistake. Open the newspaper christian commit crimes all the time. but you don't see Muslims being mean to Christians. Or heard it all over CNN.Study American history and the damage that Christian have do in the US have done we never heard on the news and some crimes have never been explain or apologize for. I'm not condoning what happened on 9/11 It was a horrible thing but for the pass 7 year all you heard about is Muslims thing and Islam that. When Christian do crimes its downplayed. Your not responsible for what crimes your brother or sister does. So why do people put Muslims in the category with the people the did 9/11. The Media plays a huge part in why the public fear Muslims. Don't believe have the news lets you study Islam for yourself not to become Muslim but to understand it. In school we learn and Christianity and Judaism you never hear about Islam in detail. in the correct way.

Well it has nothing to do with being against Muslims. It has to do with concealing identity and the possibility of concealing weapons.

Personally I think they need to make a compromise. That when the person goes to confirm their identity that they have to take off their head wear and when going through security any extensive head wear must be removed or thoroughly checked.

it is a ridiculous law....what can possibly happen with a head scarf , for assurity u can always ask them to remove in a private infront of a lady officer and she can check if there is anything that is a security hazard or anything , but not allowing them to wear scarves completely is ridiculous.

Other than the religious aspect of it all, and the situations that we are faced with now, there is no excuse or reason as to why, no matter who you are and what your beleifs are we need to be safe guarded from terror. This goes for all us. For all governments etc. my notion is they have to do what they have to do in order to lessen the thought of terrorism in their region.
