Define each first and differentiate? Are Atheists likened to an ostrich burying their heads in the sand despite hard evidence on the truth of a deity? And are Free-thinkers really as such and are open minded and ready to accept truths when evidence reveals itself whether spiritually or materially?
Be serious. It's a philosophical and religious question. Be introspective...and civilized here, please.

Free-thinkers and Atheists are non believers. So let's exclude Christians, Muslims, Jews, et al as to their sphere of non-belief, Ok?

Atheist: Doesn't believe in Gods
Freethinker: Doesn't believe in dogmatic adherence to beliefs.
They are two non-identical, intersecting sets.
By that I mean there are atheists who aren't freethinkers, atheists who are freethinkers, and freethinkers who aren't atheists.

Why did you inquire regarding free-thinker and atheist only? Why not throw believer in there? Your logic would seem to suggest that neither a believer nor an atheist can think freely. But you left believer out because rather than be philosophical and introspective, you are being a bit antagonistic. Civility indeed.

There are loose thinkers of all ideals or loss of ideals. in case you flow a ways adequate in school to learn what a syllogism is, you will understand that some loose thinkers are easily atheists, yet all atheists are no longer loose thinkers. i desire that helps and good success on your persevering with training.

Atheist - one without a theistic belief
Free-Thinker - one who is not intellectually bound by a specific dogmatic viewpoint.
The only difference is that the atheist has concluded there is no god. I'm not sure how a Christian can be a "true" free-thinker

athiests tend to be free-thinkers, and vice versa. But there are those of either group that are not part of the other group.
PS if some "hard evidence" has finally surfaced, by all means - share it.

Free thinkers are sometimes called weak atheists.
Give me some hard evidence and I'll "take my head out of the sand" if you agree to take your head out of the clouds given contrasting evidence.

An atheist doesn't believe in gods. That's all.
A free-thinker is usually a self-assumed title, to make it seem like the person has a brain between their ears. Usually they just want pot to be legal. Though that could just be my experience with them...
