Jon M: Then it's in your nature to take the easy way out. You haven't said what you did that was against your nature.

Christian_me: Then it's in your nature to avoid things that go against god. You haven't told me how you go against your nature.

3: If God existed, he made them with a nature tending toward evil - that is correct.

Texicano: You said "If we participate in "obscurantism" which is basically ignoring our natural tendency to ask questions and learn the answers, we are going against our own nature."
-- No, you are not. It's in your nature to sometimes practice obscurantism.

People do it all the time.
Our nature is to love. But love takes energy and thought that we often are too lazy to expend, so we take the easy way out. This is often evidenced in denominations who prefer judging and condemning others instead of loving them.
God never takes the easy way out.

Funny you should ask. We're discussing this topic in our foundational ethics class at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. Our professor believes that we must know ourselves before we can even step into the ethics arena.
If we participate in "obscurantism" which is basically ignoring our natural tendency to ask questions and learn the answers, we are going against our own nature. We know that babies and toddlers are very inquisitive and will even get into trouble because they tend to explore even dangerous objects.
When a person says they do not care to know, or simply turns off this natural curiousity about life (i.e. taking drugs instead of figuring out how to solve a problem), we say they are going against their own nature.
Hope that helps. If you need further info, check out the book.

People are born with a sense of "self" and that is the most important objective to them. Have you ever considered how demanding a baby is. This continues through the life of a person, and we all have to learn to suppress our natural, selfish desires..........whether it is to be rude to bothersome people, or hog the conversation, or anything else that is what we really would prefer to do over what others want. When we become Christians, it becomes a spiritual matter. We willingly turn our desires over to God, Who in turn begins to change us on the inside. We become more loving and considerate of others in ways we never even thought about before. Gradually, our desires become Christ-like, one by one. This is how we go against our own nature. God's nature is pure, sinless and perfect. That's Who He is. There is nothing that would make Him more perfect. He does not change. He is absolute. He cannot go against His own nature.

Obviously you can go against your own nature (not that I believe in any of the premises of this topic)
...Otherwise God made Adam and Eve with a nature that tended towards evil.

One could go against his own nature by yielding to the influence of the Holy Spirit of God.
For instance if you, who are by nature a sinner and a rebel against God would allow yourself to be persuaded that the fault lies not in God, but in yourself, you could then give assent to the activity of the Spirit of God within you and be converted, thus escaping the judgment of God against your continuous animosity towards Him in thought word and deed which causes you to habitually do harmful things to yourself and others.

LOL....God is not human so He can do things we cannot.... and you are correct... God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow....He is constant and will not change.
Mankind is weak and satan is around to "de-humanize" us....satan has no authority over God, However, God DOES have authority over satan....and therefore, if we have God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, then we are given authority over satan and all that follows him.
***Joyful noise said it very well. :)
