I have a 1998 Ford Ranger, and one night discovered that my headlights no longer turn on. Months before, the knob to the headlights switch broke off and I have been using a pair of pliers to turn on and off the headlights, and I think this has something to do with it.
The parking lights and turn signals work. The Highbeams flash works, but not the toggle, so when I drive around at night I have to hold the turn signal lever back so I atleast have some lights (better to be rude and shine highbeams into everyone's face than to be illegal and drive without lights). I have checked all the associated fuses and none of them are blown. I went to a dealership and asked about a new switch, and found it to be 70$, so I would like to know if there is something more likely to be causing the problem than the switch its self.

Consult a shop manual, available at your local library, for the complete instruction for removing the headlight switch shaft.
This instruction may be included as part of removal of the dash trim panel

If you remove the dash panel that covers that switch then activate the switch and the headlights work ok, then.....

There is a 'keeper' spring on the switch body waayy in back that you can use to release the metal shaft that you broke.
Take said shaft to the local auto salvage yard and find one like it.
Pay the guy a couple of bux and be on your way.

Todd,
I developed the same symtoms on a '97 F-150 - no headlight except using the High Beam tempory via the turn signal lever - a real pain. Although I did not have damage to the headlight switch that I know of - I seem to have the same problem. Please let me know if changing (or repairing ) the light selector switch solves your problem - and Hi & Lo Beams work again - thanks. The only other thing I can think of is the turn lever switch - good luck.

Sound like burnt filements inside the headlight.
