RE:
Is there an official list of purple heart recipients?
I have a great uncle named Kenneth Smith and he died in World War 2. So I am trying to get facts on him.
And he won a Purple Heart Award!

I don't think there is a full listing yet, but people are working to compile a comprehensive listing of all purple hear recipients.
"How many Purple Hearts have been awarded?
We can guess at the exact number because no consistent record was kept since the award was established in 1932, and we estimate the number at 1.7 million. The award was first retroactive to those who received "wound chevrons" and "certificates of merit" during World War I and to those from earlier wars who chose to apply for the award. From 1942 on it was limited to service men and women wounded or killed in combat against the enemy. Records were sometimes lost during wartime when headquarters were overrun and unfortunately many were lost during a fire at the National Personnel Records Center in 1973."

Go to this site to request the records.

I'm afraid not, although Congress is moving to create a national database of medal recipients. No word on what the final database will feature, if anything.

Start with what branch of service he was in. Then, the county he is from should have a record of his death and awards won, you can go from there to learn more. (If you find out his unit, you can see if there are any still living with a little bit of research.)

Try http://homepages.rootsweb.com
If you can't find the name there you might try contacting the branch of service with all pertinent information -- these addresses are available through doing a google search.
Good luck.
