The name means "work of god".
It is an organisation within the Catholic church, founded by a Spanish priest in the early days of the Franco regime.
It has a hierarchical structure, there are priest and lay members, and it is devoted to further the faith, among other things by getting its members into key positions in gouvernment and industry. Its methods are often said to be unscrupulous, in the Machiavellian tradition that "the end justifies the means", and the members are meant to follow practices of "mortifying the flesh" that have elsewhere gone out of fashion with the inquisition. There are many Catholics who disapprove of Opus Dei and distance themselves from it, among them members of the hierarchy, but the last pope made the founder a candidate for sainthood and it seems the current administration also approves of their activities. (surprise, surprise)

Read the Davinci Code. The story is fictional, but many of the references he used were real, Opus Dei is one of them. Or look it up on Wikipedia.

My latin is rusty - I'm guessing DEI is a plural form of God, but opus either means EYE or WORK, so
Either God's/Gods' eye, or God's/Gods' work... take your pic.

It is a group of individuals that live close tho the vatican that live as a secret society, at leas tmost of them are not known to be outright members even though we know they exist. Theirs is a life of physical atonement of sin and religious fervence unlike anything ever known in the common times. You can google them and find a great deal of info on the practices and such. Scary if you ask me.
