I would go with the 60GB and here's why:

The 60GB uses the Emotion Engine (actual hardware) for PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility which will allow you to play about 97% of all PS1 and PS2 games.

The 80GB uses software emulation and only allows you to play about 80% of all PS1 and PS2 games.

In other words, you'll be able to play more PS1 and PS2 games on the 60GB than on the 80GB.

If you're interested in playing PS1 and PS2 games DO NOT wait for the newer 40GB since it will have NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY AT ALL. The 40GB will also be missing the Flash Card Reader and it will drop from 4 USB ports to 2 USB ports.

Here's a quick guide if you need to tell the difference between all the models:

-WiFi--

20GB - No
40GB - Yes
60GB - Yes
80GB - Yes

--Flash Card Reader--

20GB - No
40GB - No
60GB - Yes
80GB - Yes

--USB Ports--

20GB - 4
40GB - 2
60GB - 4
80GB - 4

--Backwards Compatibility--

20GB - Yes (uses the Emotion Engine)
40GB - No (no backwards compatibility at all)
60GB - Yes (uses the Emotion Engine)
80GB - Yes (uses software emulation)

--BlueTooth--

20GB - Yes
40GB - Yes
60GB - Yes
80GB - Yes

--BluRay Player--

20GB - Yes
40GB - Yes
60GB - Yes
80GB - Yes

SUGGESTION: Get the 60GB since it comes with all the bells and whistles.

HOPE THIS HELPS!

I recommend the 60GB because basically it's backwards compatible. If you don't care about that then get either the 40GB or if you want a bigger HDD go for the 80GB. Also, the 40GB lacks some of the features included on the 60GB and the 80GB. Good luck on your purchase!

If you live in Europe - 60GB and 80GB are the same (80% of PS2 games are supported - old games run on software), if you live in US - 60GB better - it has Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU - almost all of PS2 games can be played).
40GB:
1). no card reader
2). 2 USB's instead of 4.
3). PS2 can't be played at all.

Get the 60gb PS3 if you're concerned with backwards compatibility.

I'd go with the 60gb which is the one I'm getting right now.
Well first because of what that music guy said and second if you get it now at bestbuy before November 16 then you get a free controler or game. i will be getting the controller offer.

60GB. It's the best one and most affordable. The 40GB stinks because it can't play PS2 games.

Not sure why backward compatability is such a huge factor for deciding which version to get, playing old games on a brand spanking new, next generation console is such a waste of a fantastic new machine

I wonder how many that decided to get a 60gb because it plays PS1 and 2 games actually bother playing their old games

sell your old games along with your old PS2... move on...

your not gonna be able to find a 20gig or 60gig around much. They are only gonna make the 40gig and 80gig models. even at the sony store, they only list the 80gig model.
