Man has always been at war well before Christianity or any large scale religion. The Romans, Napoleon (French), Greeks, Huns, Mongols, Nazi and British empires and Soviet Union were all built for greed and politics. Only a few number of wars can be put down to religion i.e during the reformation and the crusades (outside these periods you'll find few). WWI was caused by countries protecting their crumbling empires, WWII caused by a man's greed. Civil wars are usually caused by politics, conflict between the far left and far right.

The crusades and the fight for the holly grounds! The massacres in central America before Colombo. The raids that the Northern European people did in ancient times near Greece, because they couldn't retrieve the gold and the metals from the royal tombs. The War that Israel did against the Palestinians in the bible era! The civil war between byzantine religion parties that where against the icons in Churches and the ones that supported them. The first Constantinople's siege by the Catholic Knights! The Arabs invasion in Spain and North Africa! The Saint Bartholomeus's massacre against Protestants and Jews! The massacre against the temple knights by Philippe the second, king of France! The terrorist attack against USA by the Taliban. I do not know the exact details and the dates. But you can check them out!

Most of the wars in all of history have been waged by Israel against Arab countries or vice versa based on recorded history and pre-recorded history like what the Old Testament recounts. Of course, what was not recorded from the very start is not the one that should be considered as foremost war caused by religion.
Modern wars like WW1 and 2 were not wars fought by religion. They were fought for political and ideological reasons, though Hitler waged his war for religious reasons also against the Jews.

Crusades
Muslim conquest of Europe (see especially Spain)
There was probably a lot of religion involved in the Mayan and/or Aztec conflicts
Current issues regarding Israel
I'd argue that the US invasion of Iraq was largely driven by the Christianity / Islam conflict.
Religion played a significant role in the Holocaust (but don't forget ethnicity).

Pretty much all wars fought by man have been either fought directly in the name of a religion or supported/spurred on by different religions. It's a huge reason why God gets a bad rap. They've done things in his name that would go completely against everything we know about him.

Far more people have died in non-religious wars. Plus why exclude all the millions of people that have died by the hands of atheists governments? One does not need religion to have war.
You said religion - but if we look at Christianity in modern history - we see America as one of the most populated Christian nations - not having one war dealing with religion. Thus showing that Christians, when following the Bible choose war only as a last resort. Our mandate;
Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
"if it be possible" means there are times when you are forced into war - like WWII for example, where war = preserving life.

The Crusades is the famous one. But in that case religion was used by the pope, forget his name, as an excuse for him not loose territory and political power. In most cases Religion is the Excuse that mascaraed the real reason.

The Crusdaes is the first, obvious choice. The death toll can only be approximated, but it is said to go well into the hundreds of thousands, and I have also heard if you take all 9 crusades into account, the death toll goes into the millions.
