I have no idea what to expect and I'm really nervous. I'm going because of my constant obsessive worry- I'm tired of being worried sick all the time over everything- its no way to live. It took me forever to take this step and make this appointment, and now I'm having to fight the urge to call and cancel just because I'm worried about going. (Kind of ironic >< )

Any words of encouragement would be most appreciated. I know I need help with my worry but right now I'm starting to have illogical thoughts about why I should just stay home instead. x__x.

It's okay to worry, it's a big step getting help for your problems. The therapist is there to help. It will be hard at times and you won't get all your answers in one session. In the end it will help you so much in the long run. You need to go. If you didn't then you wouldn't have made an appointment. It will be alright. Just relax, do it on your own time. But nothing is going to get better unless you let it.

Just breath and try to calm down. It will be okay. I was nervous when I went and still am at times. Make sure this is someone you can see yourself being comfortable with. If you don't think you can relax try another therapist. Its a lot easier to tell you to calm down but I know it isn't easy. You'll be fine and make it though it.

Of course you're worried, your obsessive!! Just kidding! It is important to remember that there is never a lock on any door. If you feel that you & your therapist are not a "good fit," keep searching. You always have a choice!
First of all, most patients look for a couch, it doesn't work that way anymore, unless your therapist is a Freudian. Most therapists today are social workers, unless you are looking for medication, then you will need a psychiatrist, but that is usually only on consultation & you will go back to your therapist again.
Therapy can be hard work, especially when you touch upon a sensitive issue, but you will be a better person for it afterwards. It can be an amazing awakening & give you a whole new insight into yourself.
Give yourself credit for taking such a courageous step. It's not easy to come face to face with you!!
I was in personal therapy for over five years & now do it for a living. You never know where life will bring you, so keep your appointment, your future will thank you. Good Luck.

Don't cancel the appointment. You're going to be fine. By visiting with this person, you are going to have help with your worry. If it helps, think of it as going to the first day of a new job. You can't cancel that. You just have to take all the anxiety and get it over with. This is kind of the same way. You are going to meet a new person and you are going to talk. This person is going to give you some ideas about getting rid of the worry. You have put up with it long enough. Go get the help and start feeling the way you deserve to.

Staying home is not going to help you any further. Just take this one step at a time. You don't have to be able to know all there is to know at once... you go there to learn... you go there to calm yourself, you go there to get forward with your life and it is an amazingly positive step you have taken. do not take that away from yourself! Commend yourself for beating that nasty voice that tells you to worry... tell that voice to shut up and go to the appointment. That is the best way to counter the worry. Say to yourself: don't worry, I'm GOING! the urge to not go may exist, the urge to run has a right to be, but YOU are in control of the final decision. Good Luck!!

It's very natural to be nervous. Just remember that they are not there to judge you. Being honest from the start is very important. The first thing she will probably ask you is "How are you?" or "What's bothering you?" or "Tell me about why you came to me." Plan out your answers and don't worry about sounding stupid. It might help to jot down some things you want to discuss with her and even bring the list with you, or just practice saying a few important points about your issue of anxiety.

Trust me, they have seen some really messed up people! Congrats on taking the step. You should fill your mind with positive words until you go like "I'm so proud of myself for not being afraid to ask for help" "This is the beginning of my healing" "I'm so happy that I'm going to get over this stage of my life!" etc.

Go to the appointment. Therapists deal with so many people with so many different kinds of problems all the time. Nothing that you say is going to shock them. They have many good strategies that they can teach you on how to deal with this. You will feel so much better after you go. It is a safe, confidential place where you can go to start working on your problems. Try not to think about it and go early if you need to. Once you are there in the office you may not feel so anxious.
Good luck.

Hi!

It is normal to feel nervous about your first therapy appointment, but i'm sure it will go very well.... your therapist will probably spend time during the first few sessions getting to know you and about your issues.

Don't cancel! It will be fine. I have been in and out of therapy for years (when i felt i needed it) and it helped me greatly. I worked the program, and it worked well!

take care, and dont' stay home!! hugs hugs!!

I think it's a very good thing to go to the appointment. At least give it a try. It's a step in solving your troubles. Remember, the therapist is there to help you.

Its worth a shot! your other option is staying home and feeling the way you have in the past. you will thank yourself for atleast trying! you are too important to be feeling like this. i know quite a few therapists who have reported these same feelings prior to getting help, and now they are therapists themselves! Helping yourself is the best way you can help the world. good luck! youll do great!

The therapist works *for you*. In a way, *you* are the *boss*. You have the right to certain expectations: the therapist will listen; s/he will apply her/his expertise to the best of her/his ability; and s/he will help you get better.

Go to therapy with a feeling of hope that you can and will get better.

Good luck.
